Wanted to hear if anyone wants to share their DP coon bait recipes. I’ve been using sweet Betty sauce from PCS outdoors and it works well but don’t want to spend $18 per bottle. Any guys have any good recipes you want to share?

Something that won’t completely cake up the inside of the trap like peanut butter.

Thanks!

1. Bag of cheap cat food and bottle of molasses, both from dollar general. I don’t spend more than about $5 on the ingredients.
Makes about a gallon and a half of bait. Mix it up in summer in a big container with a lid. and shake or stir it up every couple days until all of the molasses is soaked up.
Will make a LOT of sets and it’s very cheap and effective for me. It won’t gum up your trap either…dry bait is easiest to work with.

2. Any off brand, inexpensive, fruit flavored cereal like fruit loops, fruity pebbles, etc. get the off brand and buy the bulk bag version. Under five bucks, makes a ton of sets with DPs, and works very well for coon.

Set right in trail or on fresh sign only.

Money cannot buy you happiness, but it can buy you a trapping license and that's pretty close.

Seems like the general consensus is molasses, how big of a bottle of molasses?

The corn idea seems good but can get expensive with prices no adays for large batches with how many dps I’ll set and how often they get robbed by mice. I’ve got some golf balls for this season to put on top. Does anyone drill a hole in the golf ball to lure them? Also though about drilling a small hole in the bottom and stringing some wire through and attach to the stake so the golf ball doesn’t roll away. Anyone use this method?

What about ping pong balls? You can drill into them and put lure in. I haven't tried it yet but it's a thought.

Here are a couple ideas that might be of some interest . In the winter cat food mixed with sardines or better yet Jack mackerel Is a good combo especially if there are no ants.
If the coons are after corn the use some persimmon flavored corn . Small marshmallows with a dash of vanilla extract works well

If you’re trapping cold conditions and no ants the cheapest bag of cat food and grape Koolaide poured inside, shake well.
It has accounted for 70 coons/possums a month since April, despite the ants.
When they quit hitting that switch the peanuts. They are now hitting those better than the cat food right now.
I will add a drop or two on the top of whatever coon lure I get free when ordering a high dollar amount from trapping businesses.

I’ve thought about the sweet corn oil or persimmons oil but I’m not sure if it tastes like it or just smells like it. I know coons are attracted to fish oil but don’t like the taste of it, I’m just wondering if they actually taste like they smell.

I tried peanuts last season and just got mice in my traps, one actually fired the trap and was sticking out when I got there. Honestly was too funny to be upset that it kept stealing my bait

Posted about DP baits a few days ago...

I've been running about 40 DPs for past 10 days and have used a variety of baits and mixes.

Here's what I've used so far..Best results listed 1st...

1st - floating fish food mixed with whole kernel corn (about 50/50 mix) with imitation vanilla extract and almond oil mixed in.

2nd - smoked meat liquid (from Kaatz Bros few year ago) squirted onto pellet/corn mix.

3rd - marshmallows with Tropical punch Kool-aid powder.

4th - anise scented coon grabbers from F&T.

All these have caught coon, but ants are bad on all of them.

I also bought a bag of WildGame Innovations ground persimmons (made for deer).....used it past 2 nights....no catch yet.

And today I used some chicken flavored pill poppers that are made to put a pet's meds in so they will eat it. Got 4 cases of those free that are about dated. These are gummy and smell like smoked chicken.

Pull day is tommorrow so not gonna get much chance to see how the persimmon powder and pill poppers will work.

I have removed 24 coons so only a few stragglers left.

I have a few left in the pack of those anise grabbers and caught nothing. Had one set where the grabber was flipped sideways in the bottom of the trap but didn’t fire the trap which was really strange. I’ll tell you they are pretty difficult to remove from a trap so I really didn’t understand how that happened. But I have some liquid smoke in the fridge, might do a batch with that, a batch with molasses, and some with koolaid and see what works best for my area. I got all the coons out of my back yard last season besides this one female who struggles by here and there so I’ll have to wait until I get a nuisance call to try them

When I still had the hounds I kept a few five gallon buckets scattered around the woods. Dig them into a ditch bank, fill with whole corn add a pouch of grape kool-aid, top off with water. Sour corn will draw them in for training pups.

Where do y’all get floating fish food. I haven’t heard of it until today to be honest and is it expensive? I’m looking for a cheap method, as I went through probably 10-15 gallons of bait last year

Is the fish food waterproof? Seems like it would be if it floats on the water.

Fish food and dog food kind of the same. Both float and get moldy at some point after getting wet.
