One thing dates it to the depression era, when talking of cats, "Every trapper should do his best to trap them off as they are surely worse killers than coyote or fox and their fur is of little value." I remember reading old fur-fish-game articles and other books written in that era, and always being surprised that during a big fur boom the one fur that had almost no value was the highest value fur for most of my lifetime. He must have been in the East. My landowners are happier with coons, cats, and possums than they are with fox and coyotes. Seems everyone West traps for calves and fawns. Here it’s quail and turkeys. Now this is management trapping.
