I have a pile of these, next to my skinning machine, that I would like to clean and whiten. What is the best way to go about this?

Ask Gulo on here-he has a fantastic baculum collection of all kinds.

Use maceration to remove the dried on soft tissue. Do this by putting them in a bucket of warm water heated to around 90 degrees, Submersible salt water aquarium heater tops out at 93 degrees and works fine for this. Fresh ones take a week or so to dissolve the soft tissue. Dried on soft tissue may take a little longer. There will be some odor so do outside. I cover the bucket with a trash can with weight on it to keep the odor inside and critter out of it. Check them about 10 days later and if the soft tissue is gone, rinse them with a hose and wash the bucket out.

Put them back in the bucket with the heater and a couple ounces of Dawn dishwash liquid. This will kill the stink and remove grease. Run about a week and change the water/soap and repeat for another week. Rinse well and let dry thoroughly. If some of them look shiny on the surface, you may need another round or two of the soap soak and let them dry again.

Next, soak them in Hydrogen Peroxide. The drug store brown bottle will work but takes longer. 40 Volume from a beauty supply place is 4X as strong as the drug store brown bottle and works faster. The peroxide disinfects and whitens the bone. DO NOT use chlorine bleach as it damages the bone.

Thank you.
About how long should I leave in the peroxide?

Depends on the strength of the peroxide. Brown bottle, a couple days should do it. The peroxide will weaken when exposed to light and eventually turn into just plain water. If you use the 40 volume, a day should be sufficient. The good news is that leaving it longer will not cause damage.

The stronger peroxide can be used multiple times before it loses its strength but do no put it back in a sealed container. If you put it back in the original container, leave the lid loose so it does not build pressure. As peroxide is exposed to organic matter, it sheds the extra oxygen molecule and those molecules will build pressure if they can not escape.

I boil them, and the membrane will peel right off.
