Wondering which of the two is better? Or is there any difference? Some swear they'll never paint a trap, others say they'll never go back to dye.For those of you who have tried both, which do you prefer and why?

Paint seems easier and less messy but not sure of smell. Dye has been around forever(if it's not broke...). Just curious on your all's thoughts.

The only down side to paint is the down time letting it dry and air out. 2 to 3 weeks. A dip/dye like formula 1 you can put in the ground the next day.

In my opinion It depends on what your using the traps for.

BGs and traps used In the water or traps used for coon trapping I would paint them. Traps used for cats fox and coyotes I would just clean and wax and forget the dye.

For land trapping, neither, just wax. For water traps, paint.

I paint all my traps but it is all done during the summer. No down time. But I do not set a lot of traps. If you are long lining and setting dozens dying would be faster.

I use latex paint on all my BGs and muskrat traps and It holds up just fine.
If you want to paint traps I would go down to some body shop and have the traps primered.
All my coyote traps are powder coated.

cheap flat black spray paint-- let them air out -- it works, been doing it for years. I do about 10 dozen a year. Saves a lot of hassle and the coyotes don't care.

Works well. I didnt want to full commit to F1 so I spray painted some at first. Just hard to get away from traditional methods sometimes. I was same way. So uses = Wal Mart flat black on 3 dz traps. Let them dry bout 3 days. And went back to catching coyotes. Then went to F1 for easy and convenient

I have been using the standard speed dip on my water traps for a decade or more now. I typically make the solution about 3-4 gas to dip and get a very thin coat. The question I have is for those that use paint, how far do you thin it down? If a good thin coat of paint works well that may be an option I can use.

I use 1 gal of rustolium rusty paint primer mixed w 1 gal of acetone, dip once and they are dry in an hour. Use it on all traps land and water. Works great.

I use about 40% paint, 60% acetone. 50/50 leaves a little to much for me.
And I let dry all summer and fall, if possible.

Just doing what I want now.

I used 50/50 and was happy with it. Easy to dump a gallon of paint and a gallon of acetone together. But I've heard several people quote the 40/60 ratio.

Rustoleum and acetone prices have gone through the roof at some point too.
I needed both for a non-trapping related project recently, after seeing the price I decided painting it just wasn't that important anymore.
$68 buck for gallon of Rustoleum, I'm money ahead to just let my stuff rust and fall apart.
