Build it square and build it tight and then 60 years of mouse proofing pays off in the end..

I never realized such diversity of clays, soils, peat, and , what the southerners call floating islands , in the glades . Along with streams, rivers , above and below ground. And oil deposits. In such a vast amount of land. The link mentioned marten in that swamp . I didn't like reading of the ticks, however . No wonder cabins built in the wrong place are no doubt a learning experience for the builder. It would be fascinating to see photos of that swamp and its different features. Willy Firewood trapper W Joined: Jul 2017 Ohio	12x16 is too small. We have one that size. The small wood stove can roast us. Yes, we heat with wood and know how to regulate a fire. Need safety space or combustion is possible. We always say THIS IS TOO SMALL. Then we use it and make do. You need room around the wood stove. You need room to cook, eat, store food, store some clothing, dry clothing, sleep, wash yourself, relax reading or something, store gear and supplies, etc. On top of all that skin some stinky critters. That size is way too quickly full and crowded. FRAC LIVES MATTER

And I agree that 16'×24' would be close to ideal, if all things allow for it. Just doing what I want now.

Posco Unregistered P	Sounds like we're going to be neighbors. Mine is 24'x30'. Lots of room but a lot of work for one guy. I would definitely build smaller if I were ever to do it again.

Thanks for sharing the info on that and some of the structures that have been built. Are those cabins that you had a hand in building yourself? Nof50…Tight and square is the plan. I’m sure I’ll figure out better ways along the way. And I get that 14 acres isn’t much, but I’m not looking to build a large cabin. And I have to go see what the property has to offer still before I close on it. And it may just be more suited to buying materials. We will soon see. I do have a few ideas I’m kicking around. Posco…Neighbors, great! I may be touching base with you soon via PM if you don’t mind? I could use some local knowledge up in the area. I don’t want to get up there and step on anybody’s toes. otterman trapper Joined: Dec 2006 SW Alaska	Regardless of size make it as wide now as you want it in the end it is much easier to add on length then width especially when the roof comes into play. Like White 17 said I would build in 8 foot increments my trap shed is 12X20 and I know if the Fish boss ever kicks me out it will make a nice cabin We get out of life only as much as we really want and work hard enough to achieve

It is the shed behind the cat. the 4 foot porch will hold 100 lynx exclusion boxes.

You can probably get delivery on your site. I would also have a small wood heater. I was off-grid up there for three years then I bought a cabin with running water & electricity. waggler trapper W Joined: Jan 2008 Alaska and Washington State	Maybe I mentioned this earlier, but look into "Nordic Oil Stoves" for heat (you can also place a kettle on top of them). They are a very efficient oil heater that does not require electricity to operate. much less space than a wood stove, no firewood to cut, etc.. Probably more cost effective than wood if your time is worth anything; plus very convenient. "My life is better than your vacation"

I may run with this option and build a smaller fur shed out building with the trees on the property. That seems to be a pretty reasonable price tag they have on those and it still leaves room for tweaking it a wee bit. I was going to upload some pics, but I can't seem to get them to work properly?
