Picked up Don Powells book about mink trapping at NTA convention. Must say there is a lot to digest in it! I've gotten to a part where he talks about presetting the trigger on bodygrip traps, by the way I did catch Mark Stackhouse's mink demo. Can someone please explain it to me? I think I understand what he's talking about but just wanted to make sure.

You're just barely moving the triggers back and forth enough so that the dog is pushed slightly up and is no longer touching the trigger bracket. The triggers can rock back and forth so when a mink touches the trigger wites there's no tension until the bracket hits the dog again.

Need to practice it as youll smack your fingers a few times till you master it. Even then you'll still occasionally fire the trap.

So a safety might be a good idea then until I get the hang of it. Thanks for the response.

Check the archives on tuning coni triggers. If properly tuned you can hair trigger from firm contact to just a slight swing of the trigger.

Just be careful with the file as its easier to take off metal than to put it back.

Thanks warrior. I'll head over there and see what I can find.

Or at least keep a hand clamped on the jaws.

I go with hands on jaws. I don't use a safety on conis as I realized it masks bad habits and bad habits is the best teacher of safe handling.
