Any good way to put pan tension on victor 3Ns with out altering trap?looking for approximately 3#s.wanna try and catch a coyote with them this fall but they go off so easy I'm afraid all I will do is pinch toes and educate them.

I stacked three of them under the pan and they still go off at around one pound ,made a pile of urethane foam now when it gets hard I'll trim it down and try that.

Yah thought of that-but my problem is I bought the traps used and they are night latched on the pan so I don't have much material to work with .was thinking of trying to build up the shank to its original shape but I'm afraid I burn it all down and then I ain't got nothing.

Hmm, I'd probably just get some replacement pans in that case. Since they're user traps I wouldnt be worried about keeping the original pans. You could always but the old pans back on if you wanted to sell them

Thanks there Sniper B I actually allready got some pans from sterling fur Company, they aren't the original victor but I guess they will have to work.was just checking to see if any body else has had brain storms over that issue.

Ive thought about springs on the pan but the first animal would destroy the spring.

The other thing you could possibly do is file the nightlatch back to the end of original notch. That will give you a longer pan travel and with the foam underneath that should bump up your effective pan tension. It will at least get you a deeper catch when the trap goes off.

I'll just leave them 3ns at home and go with a few new house#3. Just wanna catch 1 coyote with a double long spring so I can say I done it .do have a couple hundred better traps than a double long spring figured beings fur ain't gonna be worth much be a great time to experiment with the old school way of things.I know a person can get springs from the live stock protection company that would work on NH traps but I don't see how you would attach it to a victor other than maybe wire it to the mainframe ,but like you said it would get lost with the first catch and that would probably be a coon .
.

Agreed, miles latch is best. I love double longsprings, all of mine have miles latched pan/dog. They’re great coyote traps.

I put it on a couple of #2 double long spring to see what it's like and it turned out to make some pretty decent traps out of them.

The "normal" way to adjust pan tension on the old floppy pan longsprings was to bend the dog. Now if somebody who didn't know what they were doing has been filing around on dog and pan it is possible you don't have enough left to adjust pan tension this way, but dogs are easy to replace and pans not that much harder. A lot of coyotes were caught in 3N's and other longsprings before all the newer fancier traps came out.

To add a little more pan tension after you have them miles triggered
Drip a drop or two of a trap wax candle where the dog and pan connect and on each side of the pan where it meets the hump.
With strong springs on a 3N you should have 21/2 to 3 pounds of tension

That wax I'm guessing you apply after you set the trap to fuse or bond things together .I don't think they have very good springs, can crack them across my thigh quite easy.they are nothing compared to a NH them are down right buggers to set but I think a lot has to do with the way the frame sticks past the jaw post.
Bearcat2 yeah I'm afraid them pans where altered to much to be good for anything. Maybe the next time I drag out the welder I'll try and build them back up and grind, file them back to shape. For now I I just installed some pit#1 pans on them ,filed a little step down about a1/16"from the end of the dog.acording to my Sullivan tester they are running about 3#s now can't wait to get them planted!that tester is bottomed out on the pan after the trap fires ,before it would be half way between the pan and bottom of jaws looked like the altimat toe pitchers.should have as deeply catch now as a bridger #2-guessing,hoping.
