I have some extra chain so instead of doing disposables with just a few links of chain on the end I was going to do full chain. My idea was a crunch proof swivel attaching chain and Berkshire but the j hook doesn't fit the Berkshire. How do you guys that are running full chain anchors do it?

Speaking from experience, that swivel will make it a pain to drive, and the J-hook will open while you’re driving it in, 50/50 if it stays hooked to the anchor. If going full chain you need to lose the swivel and use an
S-hook with both sides welded shut. The system you’re trying to use here WILL fail unless it’s welded, and like I said the swivel makes it a pain in the tookus to drive. If you want to go full chain, best to go with super stakes on a welded s-hook

I never used Berkshire before but I think it would end up twisted up and bent before very many uses, and you’d have to cut off the welds to install a new one and re-weld it all the time.

Welded S hook.

OR

A cold shut properly peened if you don't weld.

Agreed on berks not holding up to hard ground.

i use super stakes and berkshires both.

a few of my footholds have berkshires, but mainly they are on my DPs.

very, very seldom do i get 2 uses from a berkshire.

Only because I didn't know how else to connect.

Thanks for the info guys. I'm a little surprised by the talk of Berkshire problems. I have some HD Berkshire that I know have been in the ground at least a dozen times.

The weak link there is definitely the berk. Chain would be way overkill for that anchor type.
I only use them on DPs and water sets now. They hold coyotes fine but I’d never get one back up out of our frozen December/January soil here.
Bullets stakes or rebar are only anchors I’ve ever been able to retrieve and reuse from frozen solid ground here.

Money cannot buy you happiness, but it can buy you a trapping license and that's pretty close.

You don't want to run chain with Berkshire stakes. The reason for chain for me is to get a longer lasting earth anchor. I run super stakes with chain and all connections welded....... I have seen Berkshire stakes with half chain half stainless 7x19 cable with copper ferrules that were nice looking and long lasting. Berkshire is designed to be used with cable. That's why the jhook didn't fit. Anything bigger then cable will bind the Berkshire when you drive it in. Or least it did in my area. If you have Berkshires that are reused more then couple times. Throw them away before it costs you a trap and a catch.
