3/4 rod 42" long what the heck for?. I've seen more effective and efficient snare setups than that. 1/2 rebar stake with support wire twisted on would do the same thing and be much simpler.

It's not for me but it should do ok. Don't stop trying or looking for better ways, learning. It's what makes us all better trappers.

For me, I don't think its a good idea to have the swiveling for coyotes, it'll lead to chew outs. Some states you have to have swivels though, but most of those states wouldn't allow a 3/4" rod sticking up to potentially tangle on.

Just a couple unsolicited tips,,,, I don't like those support collars at all, they don't hold tight enough to the support wire. A real metal wammy being the best IMO followed by tubing of some sort as a viable option. Also a small loop vs. a sharp bend in the end of your snare will lead to smoother, faster closing snares.

I use 1/2" rebar like Yes Sir mentioned but with my set up they are designed to kill the coyotes ASAP to reduce chances of them chewing out.

Wondering what is point for 42" of 3/4" rod if it's not for entanglement, wouldn't a trap stake serve the same purpose with your support collar?

Well if youre not any further than 10 feet from the truck I guess it would work. Not my cup of tea but to each their own.

I appreciate the creativity. But it's a lot of extra weight to carry, takes up room, and I can just wrap a wire around a stick that I find on the ground just as easily.

DTB. Nice work on your snare system catch a few dozen coyotes and they will point out the weak parts in your system? Sorry i do not know the trapping laws where you trap? Most land owners would not allow you to use a 3/4" shaft for trap stakes! I did not see a break away system on the snare, very important. Myself I prefer a 3 part separate system for snaring coyotes. The snare special made for coyotes, snare support and solid anchor system. Most of the time I can tie off to a big sage brush or small tree just use whatever works best for the location.

I am new to trapping. My first season trapping coyotes was last season. Caught 20 coyotes trapping on the same 7 acres. Six of which I snared using this exact set-up. [Linked Image]

Love that collective photo of your catch DTB.
Keep up the hard work and have a good time. Look forward to seeing your future catches. 20 yotes on 7 acres is impressive

DonnyTrapperBoy,
I like the fact that you're thinking about different/better ways to do things......and you're sharing it.

This is more than many trappers will do as you can see from some of the posts above. Some even sound jealous.

Keep after 'em!!!

Im sure theres guys out there that might be in a similar situation as the OP that could use such a system. Just because you dont find yourself in the same situation means that an idea isnt useful

Looks like you would need to carry an Allen key to tighten the hex screws against the support wire and rod. For that reason I’m out.

JP,
No Allen tools in Canada?

I like the idea. Better than wrapping that 9 ga wire around the rebar. And, if you dont have a welder.....

I also like that spinning attachment on the rebar to fasten the snare to.

Drilling a hole in rebar or welding something to rebar to stop the spin of wire would be simpler and just as effective and if u don't have a welder u couldn't make that setup anyway. A lap link ,split ring or actual swivel would do the same as building that spinning attachment. 3/4 rod is overkill for the anchor and unless using for intanglement all the extra rod sticking up is not needed.
But I think u know this SW and ur just handing out participation trophies.

Of course we have Allen tools. Anyone with experience with Allen keys and set screws knows what a pain they can be. Think of all the trappers with fat fingers that can’t bend over and wiggle a little screw loose. Stripped screws, lost screws, forget the Allen key at home, lose the Allen key at a set or the walk in. Your whole operation is over because you rely on a tool now. A sophisticated tool that needs to have the correct shape to function. Can’t jam a stick in there and make it work.

What happens when you tighten the screw to the rebar then the temps drop over night and the screw loosens and that little ring slides down the rod and now your snare isn’t set right. Coyote caught by the shoulder is what happens.

But, of course this will work. Until it doesn’t. Forever I’ll never understand why Americans are using #9 wire.

It shows the fella is thinking. Dad thought of ways to improve traps, and some boohoo'd him for doing it. He was told that the traps work fine without tinkering. I think he was on the right track, as did a whole lot of other folks.

Don't let the negative comments get to you. You keep it up, and you'll do well. Some folks have different laws, making some inventions illegal to use in their area. Some folks have methods that have worked well for them over the years and have no desire to change.

Like I said, you keep on keeping on!

So is snaring 5 of them using your invention.

I have made all sorts of trapping gizmos which were all useless and worthless. I sure would not have put any on a public viewing.
Keep at it and you may invent the next equivalent to the dog proof trap.

Otter should be able to go through most beaver sized snares. Not 100% though but pretty close.

In Georgia, if you catch any critter, other than a beaver, in a snare, it must be released. If the critter is dead, it cannot be kept.

And the snare must be set in the water of within 10ft of water.

Thanks guys! I sell honey bees and have upwards of 100 hives peak spring. I grow lots of wild flowers on my property to feed them. Thick plots that harbor many rabbits and other critters that coyotes like to hunt and eat. Also, over the past 7 years, I have 5 different tree companies dumping wood chips on my property. I load them into my manure spreader with my skid steer and create trails all over my property. The manure spreader works great for spreading the wood chips. Coyotes have learned that this makes the perfect hunting grounds for them. Run the trails, picking off game. Easy pickins for them. This is where my snaring set-up comes into play. By the time trapping season rolls around, the coyotes have formed trails through these thick wildflower patches. The tall stakes make it easy to set them in the tall weeds. I need a system that I could set in place quickly and efficiently without disturbing the surrounding area. This system fits that bill. I simply ride in my Kawasaki Mule along my wood chipped trails with all my gear. Stop on the trial, set my snare a few yards in and move on the next spot. Simple, efficient, and convenient. My mule carries all my gear including my allen wrench. Uh-oh, I even carry a propane torch for unfreezing any of my screwed or threaded hardware that freezes. Last year was my first season trapping coyotes. I learned a ton from this forum. Unfortunately, I didn’t learn anything from the old cob knockers on here that are making fun of my contraption in this post.

Good on you dtb, You have a very good attitude. There are some small narrow minded people on this forum. Don't let them discourage you! Welcome to the forum and I hope you start posting more.

Remember that comment comes from someone who carries a propane torch for snaring.

Sounds like you really got a problem with the op and his methods. Please explain what is so wrong with his way of doing things.
