So last year was the first year I used a commercial trap dip and some I painted for my daughter. Now this year I can’t get it off. I bought some battleborn but that stuff didn’t take much dip off and it didn’t even touch the paint. I’m hoping someone with more experience with dips can help me out. How do you guys get this stuff off? I’m thinking I’m just going back to dye and wax after this.

Thanks,
Greg

Why would you take it off?

I wasn’t happy with it. It was the only thing I changed from years past. Just didn’t like my results. I had a feeling the water I mixed with out of my barn had too much sulfur smell. Just want to get off and start over.

60/40 vinegar for 2or 3 days , trip to car wash , spray real good, soak in water and baking soda for 2 0r 3 days to nutrilize then rinse. I hate speed dip.

I’ve used super clean degreaser in the past with great results. It usually comes in a purple one gallon jug that you dilute with water. I’ve found that it strips stuff to the metal pretty quickly. Speed dip, paint, etc.
Good luck!

I went through the speed dipped used trap thing once, thought i was gettin a deal, never again. How can vinegar, muratic acid, etc be any good for your traps? I mostly water trap so i just dye with walnut hulls logwood etc. Some of my traps i have had 50 plus years and they look and funtion fine.

I have always used walnuts. Except last year. I will definitely go back to using them.

Curious on what dip you used.If you mixed with water it must of been formula one or something similar. It seems at lot of people think you used speed dip that would be mixed with acetone or something equivalent.

Steeltraps uses Formula One and I’d hate to see his catch totals if he’s getting rejections from it, lol.

I used the Dakotaline trap and snare dip.

I got most off with some lye added to the battleborn solution and some help with a power washer.

Thank you for all the suggestions fellas.

Vinegar & water covering the traps in a 5 gal. bucket
Day 3 you should have black traps and when you power wash them they will look a little gray but brand new.
No rust, even dip or paint inside the coil springs comes off.
Wash them good then soak in clean water then dip in F1. I use 3:1 ratio and it may take an extra dip or two, but when they get skuffed up just power wash them, dip in F1 and let them dry and they are ready the next day with no odors.

All my water sets are in brackish water, and my land sets are in salt coated sand. Plastic will rust here so I clean my traps and dip them as needed.

I feel like sometimes we put too much faith in our desired trap preparation...but I'm not admonishing anyone for their individual experiences.

Its a blessing to have sand and peat bogs to make your sets in,
Everything rusts quickly here because this is just a big sandbar, a barrier island where I trap covered in sand from the ocean.
Like I said, plastic deteriorates here almost like rust from the constant salt air.

If I’m cleaning Speed Dip, I use CHEAP paint thinner and a stiff paint brush. Quick dip and rub off with paintbrush. Takes a minute apiece.

For everything else, a cement mixer with about 3 gallons of 1/2-inch to 3/4-inch gravel. Takes about 5-10 minutes for 5-6 traps at a time.

I spray paint all my land traps and then cover them with Full Metal Jacket. I get about 3 years out of a gallon. For body grips, I spray them with flat grey, tan, black etc. For water sets, I spray paint with the cheapest flat dark paint I can find knowing the first coon that gets into it will shine it up back to its original state.

Stoes dip is petroleum based, so I assume gasoline would take it off.
