I am installing a Minn kota riptide ulterra 24volt (80 lbs thrust ) motor on my Hewscraft sportsman 180 (18.5 aluminum ) and i'm trying to decide what batteries to use . I know the obvious deep cycle 12 volt in series marine with at least 110 hours reserve but sealed vs lithium? Brand?

What do you all prefer? Scuba o wise boat god help me out please

I have had standard lead acid, AGM, and now lithium. If you want the best, there is no competition. Lithium is the way to go. They are also super pricey, but the set I have now has a 15 year warranty. I can fish with the trolling motor on full power for a full day and barely get them down to 75% charged. They are recharged fully in less than an hour and ready to go. I would say you would get 3 full days of fishing out of them before they got low on charge. The other advantage is they are about 1/3 of the weight of a set of standard batteries and they always provide 100% power, they don't get weaker as the day goes on like a lead acid

Gotta live up to the nickname...

Well it depends. If money is not part of the decision, Lithium is the way to go. You will need a different charger etc. to run lithium batteries. they are also lighter than Lead acid in the different derivatives. If you are going the classic rout with AGM, they don't have to be " marine " batteries. The Marine sticker just makes them more expensive. In my boats I use Agricultural batteries ..... If its good enough to go over a rough field, its good enough to take a wave or two. There ain't any such thing as " Marine " lead. I either buy mine from Rural King or Interstate, depending where I am at the time.

I run Everstarts from Wal-Mart on all my 24vlt trolling motors, they push my 21' Crestliner around all day with front and rear trolling motors, I get the 24DC Group Size and I believe they have 690-700 MCA. I ran Optimas in the past but for the cost the Everstarts have the same longevity and both made by Johnson Controls. I also have on-board chargers and it gets plugged into the boat lift at days end- you may need extended run time? I have no experience with the Lithium Batteries but sounds like that might be the way to go if cost isn't an issue

Do AGM batteries need to be vented like traditional batteries? These will be under the bow step and I can cut a vent there is not one there currently.

$700 for 2 AGM vs $1900 for 2 lithium plus charger

Just bought one of these to replace one of my Optima Blue top 34 series. The price is good enough, especially if it lasts longer than the Optima, which was 3 years.

Actually, an interesting subject that I never considered .... till now. Thanks.
If this is true, (pic) I will be considering a Dakota.
Especially with anchor mode or spotlock featured on my next one.

You will replace those AGM's 4 to 5 times before you replace the lithiums. Buy once, cry once

And your number is not quite accurate. I run powerhouse lithium batteries. You can buy their 24v 60ah battery for 975 bucks. Charger is $200. So total ~$1200. 15 year warranty

I'd love to get the Dakota's however after $2500 for the motor and other parts $1700 is out of range rite now.

Weight and durability makes these unpractical the lake I fish gets some pretty rough water and bounces you around

AGM batteries are also lead acid batteries and need to be vented. The difference between AGM and your standard lead acid is the way the lead is stuck to the plates. The working principle and chemistry is very very similar . In the long run you'll save money with the lithium setup if you use the boat often. If its a 10 days a year deal you may as well go the AGM or lead acid route.
