It has lenticels like a red delicious, but lacks the “typeiness” of a red delicious. It has the striping which can occur on a melrose or possibly a johnagold or a gala. We stopped working our orchard many years ago, so I have lost some of the knowledge. 750 trees became overwhelming with other obligations. So…… possibly a jersey gold macmelrose jonathan gravenstein. Good luck getting a positive identification!

They're decent tasting. Not overly large, about the size of a baseball. Not a sweet apple, a bit tart but not on a granny Smith level Looks tasty. There's so many apple varieties on the market roday it can be tricky to know which to plant.

As far as deer go, will they gladly munch on any type of red apple? Deer don't discriminate by color. I have a Criterion tree (a yellow/blush apple) in the side yard and the deer are willing to attempt sneaking under the radar of our two Rotties to get to, so...........
Wollen nicht krank dein feind. Planen es.

What's it taste like? That's all that matters to me. When I was a kid in the 60's there was an overgrown apple tree that had huge, homely, misshapen apples on it as big as a softball. They were the juiciest, sweat apples I have ever eaten. Never knew what kind they were. Didn't matter, they tasted fabulous. They had red streaks inside. We had a similar tree when I was a kid, long gone now, but never seen an apple that big since. Dad called them 'winter greens"?
