Setting on sign doesn't mean automatic catch in one day. I'm set on a water hole now ( very dry here) less than 30 yds from corn. Tracks and trails everywhere. May catch 4 one night then nothing for 2-3 days, then may have another 2 or 3. I use golf balls for 3 reasons. 1) keep out mice and rain if we ever get it 2)visual attraction 3) can check traps at a distance and save some time. IMO there's no right or wrong reason to use or not use a cap. Like bait for coons it's mainly personal preference a lot of different things work.

Golf balls don't help anything IMO. A mouse can easily push them off the top of the trap, if they want what's in there, and rain funnels right around the ball and into your trap. If anything it adds a small layer of deterrent for a coon to get to the trigger of your trap.

I was hoping there would be more positives for golf ball usage. I live on a course and accumulate plenty. LOL. Guess I’ll stick to capping it with a marshmallow.

Only thing I use golf balls for, other than playing golf, is to simulate eggs in cages for skunks and raccoons .

I don’t use golf balls. But, if I had problems with them disappearing. I would try to drill a hole threw it, and put a cord threw it. So, it can’t roll to far or be carried off. And if you catch a coon. No telling we’re it will be!

I don’t use new golf balls anyways. These are from buddies that golf, some look like they’ve sat in the bottom of the pond for years.

I read a post here how some guys would drill a hole thru the ball so they could run pieceof cable thru it, and anchor it to the trap, so it wouldn't walk off.

I use them. Put some coon lure on a twig right next to the trap if you are worried about coon not finding your bait in the trap. See the weed stem right next to trap (on backside) the one with dark top? Coon lure on the weed stem pushed into ground next to the trap.

Drilling a ball out works with most golf balls BUT there are some that seem to have some sort of liquid core and when you drill though one of those…well, it’s a mess, trust me. Most don’t have that inside but be aware, some do.

Just Carry a few extra golf balls if the coon hides one from you after a catch. Most times I can find it a short distance from the set though. My bag always has a couple extras just in case.

Tip. Loud colored balls like bright yellow, orange, etc. shine when there is a skiff of snow. White golf balls disappear in snow. PM me if questions.

Jim

Money cannot buy you happiness, but it can buy you a trapping license and that's pretty close.

There hasnt been a liquid core golf ball in almost 30 years. There are some steel core golf balls out there. Ive seen a steel core ball once(made by OnCore) in an odd ball golf store in Boone, NC and never seen one on the course. So you're pretty safe drilling balls these days unless you're digging balls out of a pond on the course.

Thanks man, shows how old my bucket of old golf balls probably is!

FYI, a cabled golf ball to the trap may have helped with this set. Ain’t no finding a white ball after an overnight snow and catch. We just remade it with a new yellow ball and went on to next set.

My son Noah in pic…and notice the green flagging in tree overhead. My painted white DPs disappear in snow too. Needed a way to find them when it snowed overnight.

I use golf balls often- I feel it gives me a little egg like eye appeal and helps keep rain and mice out.

The Volvik balls can be quite loud. Their "matte" reds would almost blind people on thr green but good luck finding the thing's in the rough!

Is Noah’s rifle a Rascal? I carry one every day during trapping season, I love mine, had it several years. It’s been to the bottom of a marsh, in the water in the canoe bottom and still works fine. I do clean it up and oil it every night. There’s not a handier rifle for the trapline and they are very, very accurate with good ammo.

It’s a cricket. Small, light to carry, and accurate enough we can shoot skunks from a distance back and upwind, LOL.

It does a real nice job on anything we catch. We run CCI quiets through it.

Got my Granddaughter one for her first birthday. My son took it on his trap line and made a 30yd killing shot on a critter we saw from the truck while checking traps. I was beyond surprised how accurate those little guns are. May get me one just to keep in the truck.
