I just completed my set of Victor Stamp jaw traps this weekend. I have the #1, #1.5, #2 and #3. I have heard rumors of the #4 existing but most i talk with say that victor did not stamp the #0 or #4. Can anyone verify the existence of the #4 stamp jaw? Any idea what year these were made?

There is not a #0 and I have not seen a #4. But, there are three #1 long spring variations, regular and short wide spring as well as a stop loss. Then, there is a #1 Oneida Jump with "Victor" and one with "Jump" on the jaws. And, don't forget the Gibbs, Two Trigger with "Victor" on the jaws, this is likely the trap that started it. Animal Trap Company bought out Gibbs in 1936 and acquired the stock on hand as well as trap parts. It would be likely that ATC stamped "Victor" on the jaws to brand the Gibbs traps before selling them. That would also give an approximate date to the marking. Victor long springs with the "Victor" stamped jaws have spot welded crosses, some with riveted pans and some with spot welded pans. Spot welding the cross replaced the rivet in 1937 and was started on the pans, not long after that. I would say that the "Victor" stamp on the jaws was done around 1936 to 1938-39, possibly longer and maybe for several short periods.

Thanks for the information snakecollector! Sounds like I have some more hunting to do for the others..... never heard of the stoploss being stamped, would that be the old narrow square pan stoploss i would be looking for?

Maybe Digger Dale can post a picture but there was also a Victor stamped SPRING at least in a 1.5 LS.

I have nothing clever to put here.

I had a #3 but someone etched their social security number on the base. At the time many #1s, 1 1/2s and 2s had passed through my hands so I thought a #3 was probably fairly common also.. I sold it pretty cheap figuring I would upgrade to a better one... Haven't seen another since...

I don't think this relates to the stamped jaw Victors but an interesting spring none the less.... [Linked Image]

On the 1 1/2 and 2's there is also a difference in the letter R. Some of them are longer than others. The number 2 posted above appears to be the long R. The short R is more like the one on the stop-loss posted at the top. I have a picture of both side by side, but haven't been able to post a picture.

Upon stumbling upon this thread, I now have a new set of traps I’d like to start collecting. I know this isn’t the place to buy and sell- but I believe this is a better target audience for this request… if I don’t get many reply’s or PM’s, I will create a WTB in the Trap Shed. If any of you fine trap collectors have duplicates of any of these traps with stamped jaws, whether it’s the Victor stamp or the jump stamp and you’re willing to sell it/them, please reach out to me.

Great set of photos. If any one can add to this thread with additional variations it would be of historical value and appreciated.
