Some of you already know this but there has been a continued effort to change any offensive name on an official U.S. government maps. That started with the name considered the most offensive to black people but by the time Prez Barry was in office, the removal of "squaw" started and Sniffy's DoI leaders were happy to announce yesterday its finally, the word "sq__" word has been removed from all federal maps.
In sw South Dakota there were a couple of doozies down south of the Badlands on the Pine Ridge Reservation, "Sq__humper Table" and "Little Sq__humper Table". I've never been down there, pretty out of the way places. I don't know what "special" group of people they are now up to for removing names, will they remove names that are offensive to people of European ancestry, such as (if they exist), "Dumb (fill in the ethnic blank) Creek" or "Midget (fill in the ethnic blank) Mountain" --oh a "2 for 1 score"!! Don't know, I guess I can ask.
Anyway, I'm sure more people here will sleep better knowing that this done...

Interior Department Completes Removal of “Sq___” from Federal Use
The Department of the Interior has completed the final step to rename nearly 650 geographic features featuring the word sq___. This week, the Board on Geographic Names (BGN) voted on the final replacement names in the historic efforts to remove a term from federal use that has historically been used as an offensive ethnic, racial and sexist slur, particularly for Indigenous women.
Secretary Haaland applauded the vote, saying, “I feel a deep obligation to use my platform to ensure that our public lands and waters are accessible and welcoming. That starts with removing racist and derogatory names that have graced federal locations for far too long. I am grateful to the members of the Derogatory Geographic Names Task Force and the Board on Geographic Names for their efforts to prioritize this important work. Together, we are showing why representation matters and charting a path for an inclusive America.” The list of new names can be found on the U.S. Geological Survey website with a map of locations.

what's in a Name , well a lot can you imagen trying to sell a Bill called "turn the prisoners loose on the town" or "Why bother with a Jail just catch and release criminals" no neither of those would sell so they call it the "Safe-T act" there is nothing safe about it.
how do you re-write history if you don't first re-label the maps.

Didn't realize I had crossed the sq__ creek and hunted near the sq__ mound for years. Just never paid that much attention to the name on the map. Guess if it's like our old Nig__ Nathan Hill which got the Ni___ dropped off 20-30 year ago, so is now just Nathan Hill. When us older folks are gone and don't slip them old names in anymore. The young folk will just know those places by the new name. Just like Ive only known our liberty street as liberty st. It was Berlin st before the great war.. Probably not a bad thing?? Just seems pointless to us now. Mac

No issue with them changing offensive names. No need to glorify folks that really were not worthy. Must be hypersensitivity that makes a " word or name " offensive to some Can you splain ?

I can still call anything what ever I want. Who ever wanted it change must have had their reason. Probably was called something else by many others over the years. If you don't own it why care? The change takes nothing away from me or my family personally. So why waist time worrying about it? Mac

I picked acorn and butternut s..... today. Please don't tell the FBI. Outstanding. I think its the last letter of the naughty word that will get you in trouble, just remember to put the "sh' on yours and not the "w"...

As far as I know we still have some squaw names, will have to check. Our big change several years ago was changing squawfish to northern pike minnow. What got me about that was going to the reservation and hearing the Indians talking about catching squawfish. If I am offending someone, with names I use, I am more then willing to change. It doesn't hurt me to try to get along with other people.

I still find it a little hard to believe that "whisky dick mountain" is still on the map near Ellensburg Washington. Probably a fitting tribute to many of Washington's governors though.
