I have friends in northern Maine that simply pick the field (with permission) after the harvest. They pick two or three hundred pounds to get them through the winter. I've heard of church groups doing that as a fund raiser. Here the potato growers ask the local folks to not raise potatoes as they might spread a fungus or something. They can go to the grower and get all they want for free.
Life ain't supposed to be easy.

You could glean the fields and get a bunch. Now they have new equipment and they don't leave much behind! Taters aren't as plentiful here and are a bit pricey.
I wonder if tap dancers walk into a room, look at the floor, and think, I'd tap that. I wonder about things.....

I grew some potatoes this year. I didn't water them enough and got a fairly low yield. We have eaten most of the potatoes I've grown already.
There's only one farm by me that grows potatoes. They sell seconds very cheaply and leave huge amounts of overly large potatoes in their fields.
Keith I would be interested in picking that field. Do they leave the real small ones also?

It's Michael Farms at 5089 Urbana Moorefield Pike, Urbana, OH 43078. http://www.michaelfarms.com/You can easily see the big potatoes in the fields from County Line Road. They leave a lot of big potatoes. I am not sure if they leave the small potatoes, but suspect they do. I don't know if they let people glean. I have not been there recently, because I started going to the Scioto Valley Produce Auction near Mt. Victory, OH. I was up there last Friday. I bought tomatoes, eggplant, yellow squash, green peppers and red raspberries. The quality and prices are good. Michael Farms has good quality and okay prices on their produce. Keith

Went grocery shopping tonight...got to the potato section and all I saw was bins full of sweet potatoes. Not one red, Yukon gold ,or russet. Saw some 5 pound bags of taters...but nothing loose. Is this from the heat and drought ? I don't eat many, not a good food I hear

THE highest food on the satiety index by a lot, which means it keeps you feeling full longest. https://optimisingnutrition.com/satiety-index/

Nessmuck, do you have any produce auctions near by? Local produce auctions typically have great produce and great prices, especially if you stay to the end. Last Friday, I bought half a bushel of ugly Roma tomatoes for 50 cents. I bought a peck of beautiful green peppers for a dollar. I bought a half a bag of yellow squash for 50 cents. I bought 2 bags of Jade beans for a dollar each. Keith

They have to pay 11% commision , so their seconds sell very reasonable. I used to go to the auction , and get deals like you say. 50 Cents for a half bushel of canning tomatoes.. I've seen piles of tomatoes dumped in the fields that they couldn't sell. I like going to the auction , for ground cherries , but getting so it makes a long day waiting for the end and better prices. Go to their farm , in and out. Buy 1/2 bushel bell peppers red, yellow, green for $ 8 . Butternut squash 50 cents each , and they're over a pound each. Thanks for the information going to contact them in the morning. Have a niece lives down that way, going to send the link to her also. I love to can the tiny potatoes , they're just like new potatoes with skin on and taste as fresh as if just dug. https://countylineproduceauction.com/contact/
