Hey guys I’m new to this whole cable restraint deal. I see a lot of guys running between 5 and 6 feet of cable for coyote and fox. Some other guys say they run their fox restraints shorter like 3 feet long because they won’t have to worry about entanglement as much with the shorter cable. So my question is why run the 5 or 6 foot for coyote will 3 feet not be good for both. If you can get closer to entanglement with a 3 foot cable why wouldn’t you use 3 feet for both fox and coyote. Like I said I’ve never trapped with cable restraints before this will be my first year so I’m trying to get all this figured out.

You won't be able to get a 3ft coyote snare off the ground. A 10"" loop that's perfectly round eats about 32 inches of cable. Tear drops a bit less.

Fox snares are usually 6-8" which for a round loop at most is 24" of cable. So you have 12" to get to the ground which is a bit short to me being in a CR state

First ones I used were 5' since that is what I was told to use.
What a pain in the butt.
The next were 6, worked much better for me.
They are not hard to lengthen or shorten,
especially if using an extra swivel.

Of coarse it depends on the area but I know I like them longer as well. 6' - 7' is common for me.

SNIPERB is correct. You need 5' of cable to physically set a coyote CR. I run 5' for coyotes and @ 38" for fox. I picked this up from Rich Faler at a demo. So far so good. I personally like the least amount of cable. A 5' cable covers @ 19-20 sq. ft. and a 7' cable covers @ 38-39 sq. Almost doubles the entanglement area. Like backroads said "depends on the area" and your style of setting.

Can you use a swiveled snare now? In the last i thought PA had to run straight snares.

Need stops at 8" & 38" and at least one swivel point. Doesn't specify where. Could put an in-line swivel at 38" and take care of the stop at the same time. I always add a box type swivel at the end of the snare swivel which gives 3 swivel points.

I think most of mine are 6’ and it’s about right giving me just a bit leeway between anchor/stake and trail. Extensions aren’t hard to add to end.
Shorter I don’t think will work for me here.
I run cable and berks or pogos on end of mine for cheap anchors to keep things light and not carrying too much steel like rebar. These work well for me on coyotes.

Money cannot buy you happiness, but it can buy you a trapping license and that's pretty close.
