Anyone ever notice a connection in timing between leaves turning and fur priming? Just curious, was noticing the start of fall colors today while in the woods. Got me wondering.

They both are dependent on length of daylight. For furbearers, the priming process begins around when the leaves start for most but still takes many weeks before full prime after the leaves change.

I would say here fur don't start getting good until all the color is gone and on the ground. Maybe with a little white mixed in.

I believe we all would be surprised to find out how many things in nature and even us humans are influenced or controlled by day length or the lack of day length. Another aspect of day length we don't factor in is the refraction of the rays and the color changes that take place as the wave lenghs change due to the angles that occurr.

This is exactly what I’m seeing here. High country it’s starting to turn, brush is getting red and leaves are lightening up.

Shot some spruce grouse yesterday while checking and am working loads for big guns today too! We are on the same page, minus the skunk.

I usually don’t start setting for months, so fur is already prime. Early start this year so it got me thinking fur prime timing might coincide with a phase of fall colors. Not necessarily when it starts, but maybe a month after or when leaves start to hit the ground. Or something.

My best looking coyote last year wich ain't saying much for Eastern coyote, but was caught last week of October. The rest weren't bad but he had the best guard hairs and his under fur was nice and full. My best red was first week in November. I caught a raccoon that last week of October and he wasn't blue at all. Nice whit leather. It was a average fall nothing out of the ordinary. Good post something that I will keep a eye on.

Beaver generally dont prime up till January. Season dates due take prime into account but in more northern states/countries the seasons need to come in earlier to account for weather possibly shutting season down before an appreciable harvest occurs. There's also conflicting see reasons that come into play and of course politics.

I think a lot of trappers dont know what constitutes underprime, prime, and overprime.

Prime. Thick under fur and lots of guard hair. Under/over prime……few guards, under fur not full or getting matty. Nobody really told me anything other than “ya wanna get em in the prime!”

During a more expansive and larger fur market there were good markets or niches for early prime or semi prime furs and thus there were monies to be made harvesting so called modest fur, especially, coon, rats, fox etc.
Now in a very down fur market ranch and wild we not only see the sorting down to a few species but we see the almost total loss of the market for marginal fur. I know here in WI we have a coon season that starts around the middle of October most years. There were years when many trappers and hunters started early, harvested until our deer season and sold with averages 80% or better than those hides caught in mid November to mid December and the population was higher and the conditions much better. Those markets are not here now and we don't know when or if they will be back.

It's called photoperiodism.

That's early. You are correct. I'm a shy bit north of you, probably, and I wait till the end of Oct beginning of Nov to catch not prime beaver. They would be known by NAFA standards as "coming on prime". Some of the end of Oct maybe even would be considered "early."
