make sure you get and keep the chamber spotless when chambers got rusted it made for damaged extractors which was the beginning of the end one of the first things they did as an improvement was to sell the gun with a bent cleaning rod to clean the chamber from the ejection port https://www.midwayusa.com/product/1005025528today bore snakes make after every day of hunting pull through cleaning easy because the pacific north west guys loved the 742 it is a great woods gun but also would go out and get sopping wet and cold then ride around with the mag in their pocket the chambers rusted , because the bolt is held open by the magazine having the hold open device built in and that was believed to be the biggest reason for 742 feed and extraction issues don't leave the mag loaded when your not hunting it those mags just keep getting harder to find keep the gun dry and clean and they really do last what is most peoples life time of hunting maybe two life times of hunting they just weren't a service rifle intended to be shot 5-10K rounds and get a new barrel and go again

I don't have a 742, but, i do have it's,cousin the 7400. Mine is a .308 and will do one inch groups at 100. It loves the federal fusion 150 grain pill. So, i have a lifetime of fusion bullets for reloading. Yep, keep them clean, run a bore snake thru it a few times and good to go. Accuracy is good for my hunting. My shots are no more 120 yards. Works for me. Sarge
Getting old is a fatal mistake
Always looking for reloading componets

My wife has the exact same rifle, same caliber. She has killed a number of deer with it. Has never had a problem with it recycling round after round.

Mine is a 742 - 30-06 my Granddad gave me in 1970. Killed a lot of stuff, probably near a thousand (or more) rounds through it. Family ended up with cases of mil match and ap ammo. Did a WHOLE lot of plinkin with it. Doesn't cycle well now, Pete is spot on regarding care and maintenance. My brother had the 6mm. Your groups look great for that gun 330 !

GC Pete. I was told once in Dallas Wisconsin by a Gunsmith. That it was the Gasports clogging...hmm I guess it would depend what the symptoms of your gun were , but for most 742 issues that makes no sense , a clogged gas port under gasses so it would unlock the the bolt and not cycle the guns were over gassed in many cases tossing brass 20+ feet out to the side you can't batter the over rotated bolt into the action bar and receiver if your under gassed and not even getting to lock back soft steel , a bolt that can over rotate , being over gassed , not cleaned well , rusted chambers , broken plastic bolt carrier shroud ,all lead to issues , under gassed wasn't one I heard of but I suppose one could have had the gas port drilled to small in production. there is a smith in Platteville who has fixed many 742 he stones the inside of the receiver when they jam open , he said that will get you 100-200 more rounds and he can do it about twice

this is what you are looking for on the bolt over rotation issue this is the bolt locking lugs impacting the inside top of the receiver I have no idea how many rounds this gun has it is still functioning at this time just fine , I now use it with a M1 Garand starting load for 30-06 and it shoots well and hopefully putting less wear on it for longer life. I don't target shoot with it any more , I sight in and go hunting

the barrel is just held on the 742 with a left handed nut the frame bares no chamber pressure the 740 was a right handed nut and was prone to loosening that is all on the barrel extension which I assume contains the locking lugs I never had one apart that far and they only sell the barrel with the extension I heard of one guy buying one and rechambering it from 308 to 22 cheetah-II a 243 case necked down to .224 as a coyote gun so some one must be able to cut barrels for them that guy apparently was very good for taking doubles with that gun and the reason he built it Numich has replacement barrels on the extensions , it would be a matter of if the bolt headspaces with it https://www.gunpartscorp.com/products/1817880had Remington made parts for them and fixed the bolt over rotation issue it theoretically could have run on and on and on being rebuilt , with basically no wear on the serialized piece

brownells sells a 10 rd mag that works in my 7400. same mag as 742. I ordered what was suppose to be a triple k brand mag off ebay and it wouldnt lock up, returned it and bought a triple k in the package from brownells and this mag locks up tighter than the factory mag and functions fine. 40 bucks. Cheapest new factory mag ive seen on ebay was about 100 bucks and up

I found my 10 round today , I had remembered it either didn't lock back on the last round or if it did you had to hold back the bolt and drop the mag to close the bolt
it does not lock the bolt back , which is better because then it isn't as clumsy and complicated to drop the mag
I don't recall who made mine I think triple K I recall buying it a bunch of years ago at the Wilmont WI gander mountain bargain store that was part of their catalog business so that dates it to late 90s when they got rid of the catalog business.
the factory mags were somewhat complicated a single piece you see no seams
the 10 round have 2 seams at the front spot welded and a welded on bottom and no bolt release lever making them easier to manufacture
