I recently bought some victor #3 double long springs that some guy modified. (baseplated, installed step down pit pans) my problem is that when I set them and bring the springs back to the dog side of the trap so the loose jaw can lay flat it doesn’t do that, it naturally wants to rotate the springs back to 3 and 9 o’clock. I thought it was the wax on it making the surface slippery but I recently boiled and removed all coatings and it’s still doing it. Any idea what’s going on here, all 4 traps I bought r doing it. Anybody ever see anything like that when modifying double longspring traps? Thanks!

Now you know why he sold them. Check to see if the springs were reinstalled correctly, large hole up. It should have a notch on the end to keep that from happening on the larger size traps. Can you post a pic?

When you bed the trap and pack dirt around them do they still do it?

I had a coouple non Victors do that, but they were pretty much cured of it by scraping the wax off the eye of the spring. I've got lots of Victor 3s and 4s and never had a problem... and they are all waxed.

I’m thinking it has something to do with the way the pit pan was put on or something, I’ve never had a problem with any other dbls.

I’m sure that would hold them in place but I also want them to perform how they were supposed to, I don’t need to be monkeying around with trying to bed a trap that’s always wanting to move, seems like a recipe for disaster.

Get some old victors and put some new strong springs on them.
The trap in the pic looks like a shoddy chinese made knockoff.

I'll bet they are still waxy even after boiling. Try sand paper to rough up the areas where the springs touch the jaws. You can also stick a screwdriver in the spring eye and twist that spring eye slightly so it sets a little lower on the loose jaw side.

Change out your contacts, Boco. They're Sleepy Creeks with PIT pans, made in the Good ol' U.S. of A., that is, before SCM closed up shop.

Are your dog eyes pinched thigh like in the pic, or is it a large eye?
The larger eye allows the power jaw to set higher than normal, and with a pit pan it's already a little higher than normal.
Straighten the dog on 1 see if that helps the springs stay on the dog side

Thanks, Leftlane! I like the looks of yours better. I'm planning to laminate the jaws of mine as you have done at some point soon. I got the traps today -- awesome! Thanks again....

They do work well. I put a base plating on them too as I thought it was a little soft. Now that I have them the way I like them I wouldn't trade them for anything.

I hope you get a lot of use out of yours and the new traps.

I have a few of their 1 1/2's-they are junk.
Had to file off the jaw lugs on every one just to get the jaws to close when the pan was dropped. The spring hung up on the lugs.
See the same thing on the pic.
Like I said-get some old vics and re spring them.

Sorry to hear that, Boco. It sounds like you bought the shoddy chinese knockoffs. My Sleepy Creeks work like a dream. I guess it pays to buy the real American stuff. grin
