Sometimes no calling is your best calling.

Well, time of day seems to depend upon when the majority of ducks tend to fly. Here on Pool 7 of the Mississippi, it seems that evening is the best time, rather than morning in many other areas. I like being out there for at least the last hour of shooting. Nice for those of us that work. It also seems that there is a fairly major flight of Mallards around 8-10 in the morning when they are coming back in from feeding. My family and I call it "Mallard Time" I rarely go out really early in the mornings as I have had better success during and at the end of the day. Through my life, though, some of my best memories are of being in the marsh in the dark, before the crack of dawn, listening to the whistling of wings and sipping some good coffee.

I, too, really like fog. Makes for quick shooting and unless you have a good dog and a quick boat, it sometimes causes lost birds.

My very favorite is mid-thirties with about a 15 mph wind out of the NW and spitting snow. I would have a fresh thermos of strong black coffee next to me and a bag of ham sandwiches and homemade cookies sitting on the boat seat. That, my friends, is the essence of my life.

I have shot a lot of mallards from 10 am to 2 pm during flight days when most hunters head home to watch football

More is less sometimes when it comes to decoys. If the birds are working the dekes leave the call down. I prefer an over cast day with north, northwest winds. Have the wind to your back. Good luck

When using decoys always leave a landing area (gap) downwind of where you are hunting. I also like having some "color" decoys like Widgeon, Bufflehead, etc. along with Mallards, etc. I usually put them a little off to the side of my main spread.

When using goose floaters I never put them downwind of duck decoys. Seems like ducks tend to avoid coming in over the geese.

Hunt where the birds are!! Scout, Scout, Scout.

Trying to force birds into spots they don’t naturally want to be is difficult, I will spend time scouting even the morning that I’m hunting even if it means wasting shooting time to make sure I set up where the birds want to be.
