Just think there are better options for me....I'm not unhappy, but I have about as much overpriced outdoor goods as a guy can handle....If the clothing quality was the same as 15 years ago, I'd keep it....I'm thinking a straight cash back card , I could just toss in some kind of retirement fund

I agree. Points cards suck. Cash back cards are the way to go.

For all you guys who dream of trips to Alaska (or Hawaii) you might want to consider an Alaska Airlines Visa card.
Easy to accumulate miles that are actually easy to convert to tickets on AA, plus an annual companion ticket for $99 round trip.
The only difficult pill to swallow is the underlying bank is B-of-A, but these terrible banks are about impossible to avoid regardless.

Hi Sharon, Jen and I have an Alaska Airlines card and it has an annual fee. $75 I believe. But the free checked bag and the companion fare that Waggler indicated make it a winner for us. Just used it to go to Alaska and got back today matter of fact. Not trying to step on Wagglers toes. Just joining in. Hope all is well

Yea here is even a better selling point to to the Cabelas card, try to use your points on an on-line purchase. You just need to sign into your account to do that now. Oh wait you forgot your password, no problem we will email a reset to you. After 2 trys the email still never showed to the email that they always send email to. No problem call our friendly operator! After 20 minutes and me having to read her the SKU # for all products she was able to process the order in good old 1980s fashion! LOL

I was more than happy to politely answer the follow up survey they then EMAILED me. I clicked the button at the bottom so that a customer service rep could get back to me on how best to make the experience better, still waiting on that call.

The Alaska Airlines card is Bank of America. They are not conservative friendly. The bennies are
good but you're financing a bad corp. IMO. I have the card but have been looking to back away from it. Penn Fed advertises in the NRA mags. I applied for it. Had a citi card and had problems when I bought AR parts. Dumped it.

Thank you, Tater, I tend to like no fee cards, but do see the advantage of making that back and more in travel. As others have mentioned, it would be nice if card sponsor was supportive of the values I prefer, though as waggler said, it’s hard to avoid them all.

Good to hear from you. Miss visiting with Jen too. Give a pat to those Black and Gusses for me, please …

I got a Citi Bank card at sears a year or so back. Needed a lawnmower. Intended to pay cash but they had a promotion. No interest for 18 months and 2% cash back. So I got the card. Paid for the lawn mower 3-4 months later. Tried to use the points on amazon. Could not figure out how. Called the number and got some Iranian woman or something. She could not understand me and I could not understand her. Finally just told her to cancel it. She connected me with someone else and another rodeo ensued. Finally got it cancelled never did get that two percent.

Had a discover card I just never used so called them to cancel that one too. Had 5 bucks in points which they sent me a check for.

I have two capital one cards. One is the bass pro card I use if I buy from cabelas or bass pro. 2% back. Sometimes other promotions. The other capital one card is 2% always. They try to get you to go in debt with them. Bass pro card has a 5% back on all gas purchases for the next month so I have been buying all our gas with it.

I got a Cabelas Business card and have had the personal card for about 20 years. I just got the business card last December and have $1100 in points already (I was putting all transactions on my debit card)
Along with my personal card that has $370 built up. Wished I'd done the business one years ago (dummy). Next year this time I will be getting me a Citori. Sure theres probably better cash backs out there but this
works for me. The key to any of these is that you HAVE to pay them off every month or any cash back or points is gone by the interest charges. It stinks paying a $7000 bill at the end of the month but it was
going off my debit anyway and was much harder to register every transaction in QB as opposed to one.

From time to time if you have credit cards you need to use them or it hurts your credit score just pay them off right away to avoid the higher interest rates. It always sounded crazy if you don’t use/need your credit your penalized for that.

I’ve been running the fur shed rebuild materials through my Cabela’s card to get the points then paying the balance off a short time later to gain points I’m not exactly racking up the points like I hoped for but I’m about half done.

Yes it does, I think about $65 a year. However, I use the annual $99 companion fare ticket for one of my crewmen each year, that alone saves me about $600.

Here is another example why I like the AA Visa card, and the mileage plan that comes with it.

I'm using probably the most expensive AA route as an example: Seattle to Adak (other flight origin cities to Adak really aren't much more expensive than flights originating out of Seattle).

I'm looking at fares about a month out; say you want to do a caribou hunt.

Full round trip fare is $1,424.
[Linked Image]

Full round trip using miles is 25,000 miles.
[Linked Image]

It gets even better though. Let's say you've used up all your miles but you want to take advantage of the mileage tickets. You can go into your mileage account and buy miles for $27.50 per thousand miles. So 25K times $27.50 is $687.50. That is half price of booking the regular fare. It gets even better, every couple of months you will get an email offering a sale on miles giving you 40% more miles when you buy at the $27.50 per 1000 miles.

So if you play it smart you can get a $1,400 ticket for about $500 or so.

I have figured out how to game this system, anyone can do it, it's actually pretty easy. This is how I can afford to travel back and forth between Alaska and Seattle 6-8 times a year.

I forgot to mention; but I also have an AA Vusa Business card, so I get two $99 companion tickets per year.

That's a good plan if you have something in mind you want to get. I don't like the cabels card (I do have one) because you're limited to just cabelas. I like the cash back for the ability to use it anywhere. (Redemption points)
