Is the word Squaw derogatory? I never thought so, but what do I know?
I thought a squaw was a Native American wife. Squaw Lake in my County is being re-named. Check this out -

Think they changed the duck name from Old Squaw to Longtailed Duck

There is a creek running through some property that I use to hunt on called Nappy Head branch. I wonder if that is offensive?

Little by little , they're changing what you can and can't say.
Soon it will be questioned weather or not you can name your children , or if you can even claim tham as your childeren .
Laugh , but it's already to the point they don't want you raising your own children as boys or girls.
They're to be called whatever the system deems for the day. Them , , their, child, whatever but not boy or girl.
Not he, she, her , or his , him.
Just glad I'll be dead when this NEW WORLD ORDER / ONE WORLD GOVERNMENT happens.
Begining to think our politicians are believing what they see in movies like Star Wars.
Game or Thrones , or all the other make believe nonsence .

The word "squaw" is taken from a French word (slang) in reference to female genitalia. The English translation defiantly is not allowed on T-man. They have been trying to change lake names for several decades around here.

Had two native American girl friends , one didn't care about the name , the other seemed to care but allowed it .
I knew no better.
The one that didn't care is still a friend, the other , have no idea what happened to her.
Looked for her and the house she lived in was gone , guess it burned down .
I'm not in favor of being degrading of anyone.
Now you prove to me that Native Americans didn't call their women squaws also ?

Not saying Native Americans never called their women squaws, just like non-natives call their women derogatory names even today. I'm fine with the name changes, perhaps it's long over due.

We had this same discussion just a while back in a similar post. The name change thing. Locals will call these things and places what they always have. After a generation passes the next won't know the difference with new name. My parents home was in same location for over 50 years. During that time they were changed to two different town ships. Then two different cities and two or three different street names and 3-4 different addresses. I probably only know that because I lived there. Mail man that drops mail at the business that is there now where the house was. Only knows that building by current name and address. Wasn't to many years ago.. think with up dates to 911. Think was state had the counties redo maps. Seems like the laid a ruler on the map and any road or street that lined up. Got renamed to one name always across the county.
So do we call it Woke and worry about some name change that has no real effect on you.
I personally call things what I want let the next guy figure it out.
We all be lot better off if people watched their own bobber more.

Saw on NewsMax where some think the Atlanta Braves need to change their name. But, there was a native American on there who felt the name was in the positive and honored native Americans, not dishonored them. He said he especially liked the "tomahawk chop" the fans did. The people who wanted the name change were non-native Americans. Figures.

Right above Niagara falls is squaw Island, a year or more ago some white uppity woke folks decided it was derogatory, not the native Americans, and renamed it to Unity Island.
Canandaigua Lake in NY also had a Squaw Island renamed to Skenoh Island
