Short story & time saving tip-
Lure Stick. The value of Golden Rod.

You just finished making a set. Looks good. That didn't take long. You are on a roll. It's in the right spot and you feel confident about this area.
You reach for your favorite lure, open the bottle/jar, then run off to look for a stick to place lure!
?What?
Why slow down at this point?
You're wasting time looking for a stick!

Grab some Golden Rod, cut or break into lure stick size. Keep them with your setting gear. Make lure sticks part of your gear as important as carrying a trowel, sifter or hammer.

*Other material may be used for lure stick i.e., twigs, Q-tip, popsicle sticks and such
*Golden Rods can be found on most traplines (with the exception of several western states) when you need to re-stock.
*Learn to save time on the trapline

Nice post Hern.
Jim

Money cannot buy you happiness, but it can buy you a trapping license and that's pretty close.

Popsicle sticks from the dollar store. Take up a lot less space as they are flat

Nice. This time of year I collect dried stems from Tiger Lillies.

I snip off the he goldenrod ones with the gall and grub inside. In my off time I hollow out the side. This hole in the gall makes a great place to put a lure in for a rainproof lure stick

I collected the grubs as a kid for my grandpa for bait.

Mullein leaves make great pan covers too-the hairs hold the cover well.

Forget that fear of gravity-get a little savagery in your life.

Good tip Hern on the lure sticks. That plant serves many purposes for me also.

I have used golden rods the full stem and top to make most all of my predator sets. Particularly as the weather begins to change to snow cover. I punch a hole with a rebar stake and slide the stem into the hole to hold it in place. When snow cover blankets everything around your location will change how it used to look.

When I am driving my truck or atv out to a location I can pinpoint where my sets are very quickly in the snow. That 3-4' stem and top sticks out in the stark white background.

By marking my sets back from the head of the set 8ft or so I can always find my sets. Whether to check for fired traps or when I come to pull the sets I can pin point where they are.

Great post, I put a Calculator to it and getting up to look for a lure stick was adding about an hour to my day. Not to mention the ware on my knees getting up and down. So a year ago I bout 2k popsicle sticks for $17 on Amazon. Also bought 1k giant q-tips. Made life easier for sure!

We use dog fennel. I use the real long ones as trap markers with some orange tape around the top.
