I’m going to be headed to Yuma, AZ for the next 4 weeks. Sounds like I’m going to have a fair amount of free time. Any locals on here that have suggestions on things to do? Public fishing/hunting? Restaurants?

I'd be interested to hear what you've been up to lately.

Last I remember you getting ready to go on an around the world missions trip. I don't think I ever heard a report about that. How'd it go?

That mission trip was incredible. Some of the countries were really tough to do ministry in without putting anyone at high risk but overall it was a huge success. The trip did get cut a two months short due to Covid.

Once back in the states I moved to Wrangell, AK and helped teach special Ed for a school year. After that ended, I joined the Air Force and it’s been a blast.

I spent a couple years at MCAS Yuma in the early 90’s. Did a fair amount of fishing. Mostly for flatheads in the Colorado and channel cats in the concrete canals. Even the small canals, roughly 10’ wide by 3’ deep, held plenty of 1-2 pound cats.

If you’re not familiar with the concrete canals it’s a pretty extensive system of agriculture irrigation canals. You certainly don’t want to eat anything out of them but they can be a lot of fun to fish and if you’re only there for a short time you can fish them about anywhere and have good luck. The larger ones are the size of a small river, maybe 30-40 yards wide.

Good luck

Grew up there in the 90s while my father was stationed at the MCAS. One of my favorite places that I ever lived. Did a lot of fishing and bird hunting out there.

That’s good to know. I’ll pack some fishing supplies.

Dove hunting was huge out there too. I forgot about that. A lot of folks traveled into the area for the dove hunting. Not sure if you’d hit the season or not.
