Lots of muskrats all over this year cant wait for season to open on the 15. Hope it don't freeze up by then.
No mink though, not sure if they died from COVID. Dont seem to be many otter either. Should be a busy spring muskrat hunt this year. So long as they don't all flood out from overflow this winter.

Yes. Flags and borders aside, may we have a moment of silence for the fallen Covid minks. grin

I wonder if tap dancers walk into a room, look at the floor, and think, I'd tap that. I wonder about things.....

Go get them. Our numbers are way, way down due to low water levels. They will be concentrated or not around at all in many places. COVID did not kill the mink around here. Have seen more dead on the road this spring and summer than ever before. It could be they are out more looking for water too.

Ranch mink have massive die out from distemper if they aren’t vaccinated So the theory wild ones all died from Covid is just as ridiculous as they all died from distemper Thousands of animals all confined together are much more susceptible to any disease.

I don't know, but our mink, weasel, badger and skunk population are as low I've ever seen especially mink and badger.

Not many here. Don’t they go in 7 year ups & downs? Plus a dry couple years. Saw 2 in a beaver pond near the shack. Not sure if I’m gonna leave em alone till next fall…..probably not, lol

Lots of rats here this year, have at least 15-20 different sloughs marked with muskrat activity and have seen rats in at least half of them.

With all them rats it'd be nice to see an uptick in the rat market.

Old timers say when muskrats are low mink die off and once the muskrats come back the mink population comes back a year or so later.
But I disagree I think Senior Trip is correct and it was a COVID die off.

Skunk,Otter and Lynx in high abundance this year based on recent observations.
See some every time I go out this summer and fall. From past experience when I see these animals out and about in late summer, early fall it means a bumper crop in the traps if you target them.
Lynx are the only one of the 3 that need active management.
Of course beaver are at healthy populations here due to active management by trappers.Once the snow lays on the ground during fall beaver trapping sign will tell the story for fisher, marten etc.

In the animal research conducted during the early stages of the Chinese Virus attack, it was learned that members of the mustelid family are highly susceptible to the virus.

Early research of the COVID vaccine said it was 90+% effective at stopping infection/spread of the disease, so there's that.
