Can these be dual purpose dogs? Assuming not.

Yes

Many of those BMC will tree coon by night, squirrel by day and bay up a hog on command in addition to their tracking duties.

I quit watching hunting shows many years ago when they were advocating leaving deer and elk that were hit " a little back" over night, oftentimes during September archery. Then bragging the next day when they found them well after the sun was up that they "only went 100 yards". As my dad used to say, "those are hunters that donate their meat".

Leave the gun at home. Leash the dog and take it for a walk. Trained, leashed tracking dogs are usually worked with a long training check cord. Until the law was clarified in Washington, that is how I did it. This is the first year the law was clarified and it was put into the regs. While you can't use a dog to hunt deer in Washington you can use one to recover it.

Tracking dogs are a great asset in thick cover. They will find an arrow buried in the turf and show you every drop of blood. A trained tracking dog is something to see working.

The book written by John Jeanneney - Tracking Dogs for Finding Wounded Deer thoroughly covers this topic. For those that appreciate working dogs and dog work, it is a fantastic resource and an enjoyable read. Unfortunately it is out of print and the price tag on available copies is over 10x the original price tag.

In the book written by John Jeanneney - Tracking Dogs for Finding Wounded Deer, there is four chapters on dog breeds. The author ran and bred wirehair dachshunds. Simply put everything from dachshunds to labs to hounds. Four chapters are titled -
Scent Hounds (Dachshunds, Beagles, Coonhounds, Bloodhounds)
Spaniels, Pointing dogs and Retrievers
Curdogs and Cowdogs
Old Breeds with a New Mission (Terriers, Elkhounds, German Shepherds, Sheepdogs)

The two dogs that I've trained and used were both dual purpose weimaraners. Dual purpose meaning fur and feathers.

Ran into a guy here collecting blood from butcher shop for training his blood hound.
I asked about legal. Said only on leash and only firearm is permitted hand gun.
Gotta love dogs with jobs.

X2 on waiting in our heat. You wait on an early season one and you can follow your own nose to find what the coyotes left you.
But I do agree that bumping one makes for a long track or having run out of reach.

And for the unpopular opinion, sticking deer with a pointy stick is what has led to the need for tracking dogs. JMO, but if you want meat use the right tool that puts them down where they stand or disables the running gear and know how to use it.

My old Border Collie was a natural blood tracker, most of the time she'd run the trail. Problem was once she found it it was hers, lol. "Here" theres guys that you can call to track, it's only bowhunting and there's a lot of wounded deer, the dogs they use are leashed and mostly all dachshunds, usually the wire haired ones.

In Mo, leashed dog's only, and NO FIREARMS allowed. What your supposed to do if only wounded is not clear.

The guy I’d use if needed has Blue Lacey’s and Blue Lacey/Catahoula mix.

We sold a pup out of our last litter of Dachshunds to a guy several years ago. He trained it to find deer. It was one of the coolest looking pups too…sorta a desert tan with brown splotches. He had a vest on him and a small GPS collar. I know the year before last he said he had 84 or 86 finds.

Come back tomorrow?

Seriously, lasso and knife? Not sure that a bay dog on a leash would be that useful. I guess if it was only no firearms you could pack a bow and arrow? Shooting a nonstationary target with a bow is difficult at best though.

Very rare here, although they could be very handy. Had a deer hunter a few years ago from out of state who brought a young dog he was training to be a blood tracking dog. Had to check the regs and see what was legal before we let him use it.* At least at that time it had to be on a leash, I don't recall that there were any regs on firearms but I don't think so, we are a right to carry state and you can pretty much pack anytime, anywhere except some federal buildings and courthouses.

*Absolutely unnecessary, the deer he shot only went fifty feet and left a blood trail a blind man could follow, but his dog had only tracked blood trails he had lain before, so he insisted on going back to camp and getting his dog for it to track its first real blood trail left by game.
