I'm still farming....and jealous! Trapping is a heck of a lot more fun.

Pretty early for marten; unless you just want them for wall hangers. Is there a particular reason you are starting so soon? Marten are good to go Oct 20th 9 to 10000 ft. Maybe a bit early but they will be pretty decent and sometimes you have a window of opportunity. If I had the time I'd be starting about now.

Marten do prime early compared to some other furbearers.Season opens here Oct 25.Some will still be underprime but some will be good. All the marten will be good by the time the weasels turn white in early november. Marten fur quality varies also from year to year. Some years the marten collection will have very nice guardhair coverage, and other years they will be very heavy in the underfur giving the collection a more wooly appearance. This is well documented by the graders at the auction houses. It is not fully known why but likely has a lot to do with the overall snow conditions that differs from year to year across the boreal forest.

The same is true hear. There is a significant difference in primeness from 6500ft to 10000 ft elevation. By mid to late November many guys will be rolling to the high desert for cat and coyote work. So much of the marten are trapped in a narrow window weather being a big factor.

^^^^^ Interesting. Where I trap marten in southeast Alaska the season opens December 1, I will many times start trapping them then, but I prefer to wait until Christmas or just after so they are heavy.

He's trapping them starting at 10500 ft and working his way down. They're saying the weather is good at least till Friday so he's hitting hard. He's gonna check the 32 sets he made yesterday today and set more. I'll post pics of his catch. His goal.is 100 marten in 12 checks. Well see what happens. He has very little cell service so I get pics when I get em. He's checking now. I hope to have some pics in a few hours.

Marten above 10,000 feet there is are not trees at that elevation. That's sort of true hear there are micro climates and depending on which range your in and the aspect of the land tree line can very a1000ft or Moore. I don't understand how that works, but my GPS tells me so.

In the Rocky Mountains, tree line is around 11,000 to 12,000 feet (3,350 to 3,650 meters) above sea level! Tree line means the elevation where conditions are too harsh for trees to grow, due to low temperatures, high winds, or other environmental factors.Mar 20, 2021 https://wildearthlab.com › 2021/03/20 Jerry doesn't make crap up. He says hs at 10000 feet trappingmarten then his sets are at 10000 ft.

Very cool, what an adventure! Does he have any pics of the sets?
I wonder if tap dancers walk into a room, look at the floor, and think, I'd tap that. I wonder about things.....

From my experience here in the interior it’s just then opposite. Marten are found at lower elevations (1000 ft)in the beginning of the season and as the snow gets deeper they are found at higher elevations (3000 ft) where the snow is deeper.
Deep snow gives them cover from predators. Also the food sources are abundant, mice and berries, ptarmigan, grouse. Hares have tunnels they live in at high elevations. If you ever have fell into one of their tunnels while snow shoeing you would know what I am talking about. Temperatures are warmer and day light is more abundant at higher elevations also.
So in the start of the season I would catch from the trailhead and as the season progressed and as I would climb out of the valley to the 3000 ft hight the valley produced less and less.
Then there would be the rare occasion that a hurd of marten would move into a small area for a short period because of a food source. Of course by the time you set it out they would be gone. I have only witnessed that 3 times in over many years.
I love the smell of burning spruce---I love the sound of a spring time goose---I love the feel of 40 below---from my trapline I will never go!

Very cool, what an adventure! Does he have any pics of the sets? I posted a thread..jereya marten line 2022.. it has pics. I can have him send me some set pics before the marten to post if you'd like. He caught one today at over 11000 feet. He didn't have enough service to send it to me so ill get it this evening. He texted me a few minutes ago. He's up to 6 now
