I assume it's just a matter of finding sign, and keeping an eye out? I hear they're pretty slow and stupid.

In trees on mild days, in the sun. Look for squirrel nests in forks of trees. Usually not on the ground unless it's spring like weather.

They smell like tree bark and sap mixed with urine that's been left in the sun.

Praise the Lord and Pass the ammunition.

Never seen them hurt a cat set.

Have a friend who does porky control in the hills with pine trees. He can take several with his dog. Dog's will locate them in the rock crevices or run them up the trees.

i did porky control work for timber companies for a number of years. I would drive timber roads at night and jump out and shoot them. My Ruger MK II got a good work out. I was not unusual to empty a clip in one. They seemed to be quite active during breeding season, which in Oregon was late August and Sept. I occasionally saw porky's in the day light, but it was unusual.

Are porcupines active after it snows? I would think you could cut a fresh track in the snow and walk them down fairly easily

A buddies favorite leather work boots always worked good for me. Just don't let him know your the one who "borrowed" them.
