My guess, and I have no skin in that game, is they are basing numbers on emotion, not facts.

Is a warming ocean the cause? I would say at this point nobody has an answer, even those who manage the resource.

Will Russia and Canada continue to harvest snow crabs?

Canada’s snow crab fishery is in the Atlantic. Russia has sanctions in place on their fish exports.

Can Alaskans still set recreational pots and harvest crabs?

I would bet China is buying seafood from Russia, since they are having war games together. I also wonder if that huge fishing fleet of Chinese ships that are depleting the oceans are to blame for our fishery crashing here.

Your questions is kind of broad. Alaska is a big place. A lot of rules ( I didn't say regulations ) are made by Emergency Orders. So, you just never know.

BTW are you asking about where they closed this crab fishery for these species, or all of Alaska for all crab species?

For example:

"The following information outlines State of Alaska personal use king crab regulations for waters of Alaska in the Southeast Area. This is a summary of selected personal use regulations and should be used in conjunction with the current Personal Use Statewide Fisheries Regulations.

This fishery is managed by emergency order, the fishery may not open or may close at any time, or the bag limits and/or gear limits may be reduced at any time. Always check with your local ADF&G office before going crabbing. Get more information on personal use news releases.

Yes depending on species and area. Where I goof around limit is 3 tanner crab/day, but no season for red, golden or blue king crab or Dungeness. In areas of the Bering Sea, Nome for example, they ice fish for red king crab. I have no idea if ADFG will allow that personal use take this year or not. I would guess not but I don't know.

"Golden king crab and Tanner crab may be harvested in Prince William Sound outside the Valdez nonsubsistence use area by obtaining a subsistence crab permit from the ADF&G Online Store."
