There was mention some time ago. about using a rope set , hanging over a deer scrape. I know a buck likes to play with an overhanging limb. , at a scrape. Would this be a short piece of rope with some buck scent on it. I use a dripper, made from a 2x2 about 6 inches long , A 1/2 inch hole bored in it, put a wick in hole and soak it with doe scent , hung over a scrape. Works quite well. . Any thoughts. I go for cateract surgery on open day of deer season , poor timing but have been waiting about a year. , can't see to shoot anyway. Will be glad to get fixed up, hope to be dead eye Dick by next year. old243

No need for scents. The deer with leave their scent. All deer will use it, not just bucks.

Maybe that stuff works up north but I haven't had much luck with a rope or grape vines.

If you have a natural deer scrape, I wouldn't touch it and I'd hunt it, if you can find a scape line even better. I use 1" diameter hemp ropes for making mock scape lines, these are all positioned within bow shot range, I let the rope sit out about a year and they get placed in December after gun season. In mid-summer I spray round-up in about a 4' oval shape under them, early September I rake dead grass and put Smokey's Wicked Wick scent on them, the rope bottom is frayed and hangs about 2' off the ground. This is for new rope scrapes, once established they never get touched again. Fawns does and bucks consistently use them. If you look closely at a fresh hot scrape a lot of times the horizontal licking branch and orbital rubbing spot gets broken off and ultimately the scape is abandoned, the rope or grape vine being vertical, eliminates that. We have a small patch of sumac that gets rubbed to the ground with scrapes consistently found on a field edge- same principle for communal rubs.

I use vines that I cut and tie up in the tree and make a mock scrape, here is one I put up on public land. The doe are starting to use it some.

Old243, best of luck with your eye surgery. If it goes well you should be in shooting shape in about a week. If you are shooting using a scope you will need to readjust the reticle focus.

M experience is that making mock scrapes works Maybe not all the time but one more thing to try especially if it seems like not miuh in happening

Thanks for the reply;s. I will set a couple up. I have created mock scrapes , using a dripper. Something new to play with. Have had good luck with a drag rag, to bring a buck in, Cut across a couple of deer trails , then hang your drag rag where you want them to come to. Usually come with their nose to the ground , like a hound, Not paying attention.

Looking forward to my cateract surgury, I miss being able to see well enough, to shoot and carry a rifle.

If you're putting a stand over it, factor the wind and the "j" hook the deer will use before he comes in.

On one of Jeff Strugis videos- he talks about when you have mock scrapes and deer make natural scrapes nearby (and they will) to cut the licking branch off with a pruning shears to redirect them to your scrapes- I thought this was a great idea to force abandonment.
