And if you have some alum, rub it into the greenish area right away.

The effect of green belly is often over stressed by many. Although green belly can be serious it is common on a lot of fur animals. It is not a serious defect until it turns really dark brown or black, then you will start to see some slippage of fur. I often have coyotes hanging for 2-3 days (even 5) in the shop at 40 - 60 degree F temperature with no problem. The initially frozen coyote in this picture was hung face down for 5 days and was perfectly fine re fur slippage. If you’re worried about it, wiping the area with vinegar or 3% hydrogen peroxide solution will kill the bacteria causing the rot.

...and let me be the first smile

Borax is soap. But also used by taxidermist as a insecticide to dust birds and fur to keep the bugs from eating the mount.

It somehow morphed into a preservative (which it is not), but does work to sop up blood and greasy pelts much like sawdust.

Borax does provide many uses and effects. Primarily it acts as an astringent drawing moisture from the applied materials. As a result, without moisture, mold, mildew and tissue breakdown is stopped. Hence it stops rot and continuing tissue breakdown. It is also a very effective insecticide and cleaning agent.

I have been using borax for many years when I am on the road trapping. I don't always have the best conditions when putting fur up on the road. Moisture and humidity are always a problem for me so I always dust the ears and any questionable areas on the hide to prevent any problems until I get home. Never had a problem.

For years many of the early lure makers used Borax as their primary preservative for stopping glands and baits from continuing to breakdown. Some most likely still do. There are better preservatives out there for that purpose.

I agree , used it many times to draw moisture out of hides.
Knew an Amish that would use borax to dry turkey tails , still have one on my wall right in front of me now.
Breast plate and all .

There's always a box on the shelf in my fur shed. I'll rub some under the front legs and into the ears before I flip reds. I'll sprinkle some more in the ears before pinning them down after the flip..

Eh...wot?

It doesn't take long for that to happen with any canine. I use borax also when I find that.

Flesh promptly and you will remove a lot of that green. Spray it down with a little Lysol and it will stop the bacteria causing the green belly.

If you do have a little slippage you can carefully trim the slip spots out and sew it back together... Of course you will have to decide if a fox hide at current prices is worth that effort.
