I raised them to sell once. Probably never again. I already do beef and pork and had lots of my customers were asking for chicken. I told them ahead of time that the price would be dependent on how much I had into them at the end as I had never raised any to sell before. But I gave them a estimate of $3.00 a pound. I raised 100 of them and my cost came in right at the three dollars before I made even a penny on it. I stuck too my estimate even though I wasn't making anything on them. All but a few of the people who ordered them backed out saying it was too expensive. I told them before we started that I could not complete with the price at the store. They all said that they were willing to pay the extra to get quality locally grown. Not so when it came time to pay.
This is why when we started we started with only around 30 birds. I could see what my cost was and if some sold good and if they didn't we would keep them for us. So we raised what we wanted for the year in that first round.
Saw our cost marked them up enough to be worth our time and offered them for sale. They sold well enough if not all of them we did 2 more small batches that year.
I alway keep in mind they may not sell and keep the amount to where I have room for them if they don't.
We have some good customers that tell us how many they want and none have backed out yet. I would be so irritated if that had happend to us on 100 birds and At a price I made no profit.
