Thought I would follow up with a pic of my lush green Winter Rye…. good news is: I won’t have to mow it before the snow flies.

You coull plant oats or forage oats this fall. They probably will sprout and then grow a bit anf freeze off, but you could get some ground cover. For me having a short plant dead in the spring would be better than planting winter rye which will sprout now and then grow 3-5 feet tall next spring. If you plan to work and till the area not a big issue. If you don't want to till then all that fiber is in your way.

I would go for it but would use ELBON rye instead of the others and wheat or oats for my winter stuff. As said before the others will do fine under snow and pop in the spring.

I have seeded a lot of food plots in my life and suggest you contact the Ag Extension office and ask for someone who has experience in cover crops (food plots) for that area. Cover crops are probably a better term to use as anyone involved with Ag will be looking for good establishment to carry over into next spring (which just coincides with your food plot objective). Here's a picture of my small garden ones........... the mike [Linked Image]

Great, I did rye 2 years ago at end of September and didn’t get much growth.
