I understand the primeness of most of my local furbearers, just curious if there's a difference in otter fur (per time of year)? I don't know much about these critters other than they are becoming prominent in my part of the country.

Otter prime later than other water furbearers.
Where I am they are not prime until late November.
I will not balk at taking them a bit earlier than that.

Just to give me an idea...when do you reckon a coon or coyote would prime up there?

February will get you the best here in Kansas, if you want to tan some for yourself. I'm talking about otter here.

Land fur primes up here in mid november, marten earlier ,cats are later. No coon here.

By february, here, land fur (except lynx) is past prime, otters would show different degrees of singe by february.Beaver and rats are prime right into April, until they start to get bit.

There should be a priming chart available for pelts in your latitude.

Here where I am I always figured Thanksgiving through Christmas is the best time to trap for good fur. Like Boco said some fur is earlier and some are later.

Maybe a better question is, what to look for? Is the leather "blue" like a coon, or is it all in the fur/underfur? Just trying to get as much info on these guys as I can! I understand that singe happens late, I just wonder if there are the same problems with them as other animals. I.e. rubbing, stains, etc. I REALLY appreciate any and all insight!

Otters coming on to prime, with slatey blue leather are graded as strait hair and are good pelts, not yet creamy white in the leather, but good fur non the less.
They grade as I-II (which is a good grade)if no dmg.
Creamy white leather with no dmg will grade I or select.
Early caught otter with darker leather, will have shorter flatter guard hair with less dense underfur and will grade as II's

I have had the Canadian auctions downgrade my slate-blue otter in the past. H.E. Goldberg, on the other hand used to pay top money for early bluish leather otter realizing that these straight haired early pelts tan up the best.

In western Oregon we don't get clear leather on our otter usually until mid December.
