Vengeance serves as a deterrent in an unjust world
If you know history, you understand that it's just the opposite.
The Hatfields and McCoys are just one example of millions of examples of people exacting justice on other people.
The question isn't "is it deserved" because this world is FILLED with examples where it SURE may be according to the person judging the situation.
The question is who measures out the justice we seek. And why?
The "why" would be called in English, what the Bible refers to "Retribution."
Retribution is written x4 in Scripture.
In the Old Covenant (Testament) in the Law given to Moses;
Deuteronomy 32:35; Vengeance is Mine, and retribution, In due time their foot will slip; For the day of their calamity is near, And the impending things are hastening upon them."
Hosea (in 750 BC) wrote about it as he warned the 10 Northern tribes of Israel.
And then the Apostle Paul, who God called to bring the Gospel to the Gentiles, wrote about it twice. Once to the Thessalonians and most notably to the citizens in the biggest city of that time: Rome.
In Romans 11:9, Paul adds to king David's writings about snares and traps...
"And David says, " (What David wrote) Let their table become a snare and a trap, (what Paul added) and a stumbling block and a retribution to the them."
Stumbling block and retribution to what? Eternal salvation.
The Romans were a culture built on warrior status. They didn't have a legal system based on Judeo-Christian principles (right and wrong) as we do, but rather upon "Shame and Honor."
You wanna talk about vengeance... the Romans were you're kinda folks. They toasted their wine goblets to the success of it!
And God's Apostle says to them, the people of this world will set their own tables and in that will come their traps and snares.
Whose checking the trapline all day everyday?
Well it's not Santa Claus knowing if you're naughty or nice.
It's the God who by grace calls us, redeems us, and seals sinners like us everyday.
Prophets like Moses 3500 years ago. Premier killers of Christians like Paul 2000 years ago. Or average people still today.
The only one yelling for vengeance is the enemy. He's always been the father of all lies.
He's lying still.
But for grace, I'd be due an immeasurable amount of vengeance and retribution.... for starters.
Blessings,
Mark
