James 1:13
Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man:

Matthew 6:13
13 And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from the evil one.

Why would we have to pray that God lead us not into temptation if He cannot be tempted nor tempt us?

I'm guessing it's a poor translation. The original Greek probably would make a bit more sense. But it still a good question to think about. Just my 2 cents.

I'm thinking it's more along the lines of us "let us not fall into temptation." Not that God is leading us there, but rather asking him not to let us lead ourselves there. That's my take.

A slippery slope adding words, plus we are not to lead but be led? Who should be our leader?

If we are not to lead ourselves into temptation do we also deliver ourselves from evil?

Ok, here is my take based on the wording in other Scripture on “Temptation”

Let’s say you you are in the checkout at a store. The clerk gives you back $25 dollars more change than you have coming. The “Temptation” would be to pocket the money. A.K.A. (Stealing).

God often places us in positions in life that we are tried. All those trials present a temptation.

So when we ask God to not lead us into temptation we are asking him not to place us in a position in which we may fail.

Scripture also says God will not give us more than we can handle. If at times we feel it is more than we can handle we are not fully turning to him.

Also the use of the word temptation is some cause for misunderstanding as it can have a different meaning today.

Jesus knew how he was to suffer. He prayed that God take the cup from Him. But neverless let His will be done. In a way Jesus was asking for God to remove his temptation (trial) because of the suffering he was about to endure.

We are asking Him to take the cup (temptation) from us so that we don’t fail and fall into sin we we pray that He leads us not into temptation
