The odd one is on the ground when setting out lines but not many.Depends a lot on the set up.Double tree set ups requare the most mtc and when left fallow for a couple years one end will be down, sometimes the whole thing.
I always carry a couple in the sleigh when setting up winter lines cause there might be one down and you wont find it under 2 feet of snow.
If all are up,I just add the other box to the line at the end.
Plastic is useless for me as a marten cubby.Doesnt hold a trap well compared to wood.
Another poor choice for a marten cubby is the wire mesh cubby-bait is always gone and trap still set.
A trapper on a neighboring line to one of mine used 5 gallon buckets for marten cubbys one year.He shoved a half a beaver in each one,put the lid back on and cut a square hole in the bottom for a 120.
I dont know how many buckets he collected but his marten quota was 200 a year. He went back to boxes after a couple seasons.
I still find the odd orange or yellow bucket along a trail on his old line when I go to a lake to fish.
Boxes integrate on the land [Linked Image]
after a while,unlike plastic.

I dont think fisher go under the snow in mid winter like marten do.
Fisher here like more mixed bush less mature boreal forest.More similar to lynx core habitat.
We dont have big numbers of fisher here, but there are some.
I think the fisher have a tougher time in winter competing with lynx for the rabbits.

Fisher do spend quite a bit of time underground especially in woodchuck burrows and old beaver houses especially when it hit -25c for any time

Yes they will hole up with a bone like marten but I never seen where fisher hunt subnivean in the hollow space between the ground and the snow like marten do extensively
Last winter here all the marten went subnivean in December and never came up until March,no tracks all winter, just the odd pop up hole, then started seeing them and their sign after the rabbits in March. We had an extensive dry snowfall last winter, perfect conditions for the marten to stay under the snow.

Same thing happens to mink in winter but they go under the ice till breeding season.

5 gallon buckets and half a beaver of bait for a marten set. You don't see that one very often. I bet those buckets didn't shatter at 30 below when they were not sun rotted. I know my wolverine ones don't. smile

BOCO, the first photo shows a set I came across in Maine. I always thought it would be better with an easier path to the trap. Same guy also set that way with a trap in each end of the box. The next two photos show how I was doing it then.

There is a lot of variations, lol.

Yea that guy had quite a long line.half a beaver attracts a pile of fur,to the traps and snares and lasts a long time.Mini jackpot set.

I like the innovative use with the branches...I'm sure it's been done that way for a long time, just never seen it. Makes me think of how I can utilize something similar to my line.

They work in a pinch, but the box is much better-quicker to reset and last for decades.
The pole cubbys main problem here is keeping bait in it.Similar to the box made of wire mesh, the bait is all gone in a day or two and the trap is untouched. [Linked Image]
