I'd say it should be split just as everything else was. Every one gets an even cut of what's left after taxes and legal fees.

well from a guy who has seen not that much money cause stress in a family

you have to ask what is your relationship with the 3 siblings and is it worth changing it over less than 800 dollars.

my dad does some very nice wood work, his cousin cut down a tree about 20 year ago from his moms property had the log milled and then stored the lumber in his moms garage shortly after moves out of state and across the country with no plan to return leaving a pile of things at her house. the lumber sits there for years taking up space she tells her nephew my dad if you can use it get it out of there.

he takes the wood to his shop and uses it to build her an entertainment center first and then some other small stuff but most of the wood went into a piece of furniture for her and is in her home.
dad's cousin is mad to this day wants 700 dollars for the wood and will not talk to my dad , he finally talked to his mother after about 7 years.

you know your family politics better than anyone else , so just ask yourself is it worth what might happen over less than 800 dollars

my dad wasn't close with this cousin and does all sorts of things for his aunt and is close with her, that cousin was mad at his sister and mother for years also, different thing , just the way he is.
he might have just found another reason to be mad at people but added strain over what was maybe 250 dollars in wood that cost him less than half of that and then was left for years with no plan to come back for it.

America only has one issue, we have a Responsibility crisis and everything else stems from it.

Equal shares to everyone. If the money is in fact a paycheck, he would have had taxes withheld from it. If that paycheck was included in his final W2 his tax obligation would have been fulfilled. Now when you take the money will they 1099 you? If they 1099 you, you will need to claim it as income.

Lmao. Stop trying to sound like there is some mountains of paperwork. Unclaimed property is by far the easiest to get, especially checks. I look every couple of years, its no big deal. This is even true if the relative has passed away.

TBH the fact that you worded things the way you did and the fact you didnt just make a post about how you split it with your siblings confirms it. This isnt even a question in my family, its called split or nothing.

I said at the top this thing has already been decided. This is more of a pole on what you guys would have done. Yes I split it with all the siblings yes I will have to pay taxes on it. Do I care about the money? no. Do they? no. I does my wife think I should have just kept it? yes. All my siblings are pretty well off I am not hurting either. I am just curious about how others would have handled a small sum of money between family 12 years after the fact with it being up for anyone to grab that wanted to.

Thanks for the replies. I don't think there is a wrong answer to this question. Except for not claiming it and letting the government keep it lol

Life sure is tough when you don't learn from the mistakes of others.
