A LOT of threads are only made to stir the pot, A LOT of them. From the "click bait" title to the vague content, to the passive-aggressive wording, it's all designed to illicit a response they can then argue with,,, and there are always those willing to provide that response.

It breeds more and more of this behavior to the point where if you want to make a good post, you have to so carefully word it, look at it from every possible angle and probably re-write it, or delete it altogether, before you decide to post it because some idiot will figure a way to twist it around and make you out to look stupid if there is anyway possible. It gets worse, and then gets better over time, but there is always a possibility.

Donovan,
You just keep being Donovan.
If some people don't get you, that is their loss. You aren't all that hard to figure out as far as I am concerned. You have your head on right, especially taking into consideration your age. You are mature well beyond your years.
Your comments about being the "resident black trapper" really hit home with me. Talking about the elephant in the room right from the get go is a great idea.
It reminds me of a fella who hung out with us at the Bait Barn in Virginia Beach over thirty years ago, when Gunny Hathcock was still with us.
This fella had his eye shot up in a BB gun war when he was a kid. It didn't look horrible, but it did get people's attention when they first met him. I am sure that he got tired of the stares. He never complained about it, but I am sure it did bother him every time someone asked him what happened to his eye.
Well the good friends that we were, we started calling him One-Eyed Mike, and introduced him to people that way. Guess what? Mike could not have been happier about it. It took away a lot of that stress of people gawking at him.
Thirty years later I ran into some people who were talking about a guy and said One-eyed Mike. I knew right away that they were talking about our One-eyed Mike, and sure enough they were. How did these folks, who were in diapers thirty years ago know him as One-eyed Mike? Because that is how he introduces himself to people to this day.
The moral? Be yourself. Own it. It will set you free.

'ts why I posted what I did...I usually proofread my posts at least once before I post, and then edit at least once! I try to only make threads that are inquisitive anymore, because I want to learn more about trapping!

After reading the post ADC linked I believe it was VABeagler.

I don't know if VABeagler did too, he might have but he also said he was leaving.

But the one causing all the ruckus last night was Arkansas something or other. That post got deleted. ADC must have missed it.

History is complicated, as complicated as the humans who made and are still making it.

As a southerner, 8th generation Alabama, and a self appointed senatchie (gaelic=oral historian usually family/clan history) we have a rather troublesome past.

My own history includes both slave owners and sharecroppers on my mother's side and yeoman (landowning) farmers on my father's. To a man all wore the grey.

Both of my great grands on dad's side were members of the klan. Yet their motives and positions in life couldn't be further apart. One was a landowner and respected member of the community whose motive was more politically social the other was a craftsman who never owned the house he lived in. The former left the klan when it was no longer politically advantageous, the latter was still a member in the sixties and probably was until he died in '76. I never met the man even though I was born in '69.

I well recall my granny (spoiler, my granny called my grandfather brother as she was actually my great aunt who raised my father and uncles after the death of their mother, my grandmother) telling of her worst childhood memory. Her father my great grandfather was up walking the floor in a quandry of a duty he was expected to take part in yet he wanted no part of. The men of the community, klan, had to "discipline a colored". Her words and I do not know to this day what that entailed. This would've been in the '20s.
Yet there was living on the homeplace a tenant colored family that were treated as family as they were not sharecroppers but instead worked side by side with the family. Mainly due to great grand's poor health. Granny would share many intimate details pointing to a close relationship. Yet to this day I do not know their names other than the man of the family, Joe.

Then there's the story of just how my great granny learned to cook possum. It seems my grandfather would come up missing at supper time. He was finally tracked down to the tenant's house at the dinner table eating possum. So because some things just wasn't done at that time my great granny learned to cook possum to keep him at home.

That worked for awhile but years later after my grandfather had taken over the farm and the tenants moved away he built a nice snug little cabin not much bigger than a corn crib within walking distance of the house. It held a bed and a stove. I'll let y'all deduce the rest but granny would disown me and deny what I know to be true.

Dad himself would never acknowledge but has let certain items such as the widowed redhead in Clarksville he wasn't supposed to tell his granny about.

My father became a Republican in high school, Eisenhower republican. My mother shortly after meeting Dad in college. This was in the solid democrat south and in opposition to their parents. (No, the parties did not flip) Both opposed George Wallace and segregation yet my father would bitterly complain later about affirmative action and how it effected his career track.

Complicated, lots to dislike yet it is my family and a family probably not unlike many others.

So my takeaway from this tell all is we are what we are imperfect. Honor what you value and let sleeping dogs lie leaving the distasteful behind us and hopefully not repeating bad history.

And, yes, there are still yet other particularly sordid details I may never disclose.

I want to give a shout out to Donavan for threads like this. You have my respect for serious contemplation of matters such as this and not just reacting as all of us southerners were taught to do. Only by being open and honest with each other can we get to what I believe. We are all family black and white, we've lived on the land for generations. We are southerners let's find what we all can be proud of.

And if you find any of this offensive please accept my sincerest apologies. Just trying to scare off some old ghost here without tiptoeing around it.

Oh, and your welcome at my dinner table anytime though I must admit to never learning just how to make possum fit to eat.

OK, so as you know the Arkansas guy was calling wolfdog out (but not by name) for "bashing" the confederate flag. Wolfdog asked who he was talking about and he ignored him but continued on about it, so wolfdog asked him again. Eventually he did say it was wolfdog he was talking about and then went on saying he was a sorry sack of.... for posting stuff like that, etc etc. The post got deleted.

Then he started on another post which Pete locked. Some other mod went behind Pete and unlocked it again though later, not sure who.

Then the kid started the same stuff on a third post and someone banned him. Thought it was bogmaster but later saw White say it was him so I dunno... doesn't matter, he had it coming.

That why you should never drink and T'man, lol.

I think I get what you're saying' wolfdog and unless I'm mistaken you only used the confederate flag as an example.

I think what you're saying is people want their topics/opinions wrapped up nice and neat and tied up with cute little bows. Unfortunately, it's exactly as you're saying, the topics/challenges/decisions we're facing today are complex and require a good deal of effort and critical thinking to determine what position you should take. Sadly a lot of people don't want or don't know how to do this let alone think for themselves.

Keep thinking, wondering and questioning wolfie

You dont have to worry about drunk driving as long as you always drink enough whiskey to forget where you parked the truck.
Thats drinking responsibly.
