Was out putting traps for coyotes. Have lots of sign on old mine roads around my property. The area is mostly reclaimed strip mine and timber. Some Ag. I’m using Wolf Fangs and I made a hardened driver from a long crow bar I cut and heat treated. Problem is that the rocky ground much of the time bends the anchors in half or mangles them.

The best sign and most I have found is an old abandoned rail road bed that was reclaimed but is nothing but ballast and impossible to even make a set.

I’m thinking just go with rebar and attach the trap to that as I am sure I can pound it Into the rocky ground.

Thoughts?

Is there brush around you could use drags or cable or chain to? If not, maybe make some concrete or wood clogs

There’s all kinds of undergrowth and brush. I think a drag would work fine but I don’t have any, I’m here on my place for two weeks and I don’t think there’s any trap supply places around. And I’m here to bow hunt. But (This word is unacceptable on Trapperman) if there isn’t a pile of coyote around here. They light off every night when the whistle blows up in town every evening. All over. Countless numbers of them howling and yipping.

You could cable off to a nearby tree with cable or use a 1” concrete bit and drill a pilot hole for your anchors. You probably only need to go down 12” or so in the rocky road.

I trap the same places. 2 18” rebar stakes and a 6 pound hammer. Keep you a pipe wrench to twist them a little to get them out.

Yep. Talked with the neighbor who traps and he told me the same thing. Said that cable anchors won’t work. Said he only uses them around the ag areas that haven’t been stripped. Off to Lowes in the morning after chasing deer.

I don't have rock but I would think chained superstakes would hold up the best beating against rock IF you could get it down. Of the disposables I've used it does have the most resistance to being driven in tight ground. Wolf fangs seem to drive easier but can be bent or damaged and cable is more vulnerable than chain.

I've often wondered if someone could design a stake head just a half inch in diameter/width that fit flush on a half inch driver with a minimal bump out for cable or chain attachment.

Have you seen the ones JR sells? They're pretty close to what you're thinking of

I made up some rebar stakes. 1/2”x24” with a big nut welded to the top. A 4lb hammer will make short work of driving them down.
