How do you get your traps oiled or prepped for season. I know its kinda late but my bro left traps out all my winter.

I wax my coyote traps and everything else gets a nice coat of speed dip. I like the way that speed dip coats a trap and the coon and muskrats don’t care about any gas smell that maybe left behind. I’ll clean the traps with a pressure wash before I dip any and let them dry and sometimes the coyote traps will get dyed in logwood dye as needed

What is the mix you use for speed dip?

Everything is done in the spring - early summer. Clean them and fresh coat of paint the ones that need it. Hang them in the shed and wait.

Around 4:1 gas to speed dip. I think the can says you can even go 5:1

Do you need to use WD-40 on them if they have been out in the ground all winter?

Do not put wd40 on your k9 traps

Set them and snap them a few times, it’ll knock off a lot of loose rust and crud. Then pressure wash . Let dry few days , boil in logwood dye and wax

Depends how bad they are. If there wasn't any protective coating on the traps before he left them in the ground all winter it may take some extra work to get them ready. No oil. Either a dip made for trap, trap dye and/or wax or some guys dip in diluted paint. The trap dye, wax ands dips you can buy from trapping supply dealers. I would think if your dipping them instead of dyeing u would want all the rust cleaned off or it will continue to rust underneath dip. If dying a light coat of rust is actually good but any scaly rust and dirt needs removed. Pics would help the guys point u in the right direction. If those traps were set and not being checked that's irresponsible as a trapper and gives trappers a bad image. Some states require them to be checked if they are out even if they aren't set.

I'm assuming there pretty Rusty, soaking them in water over night will loosen most every thing. I just spray with a garden hose jet spray. If there still real Rusty you need to wire brush then rinse again then wax.

If they're super rusty you can soak them in vinegar over night, then in the morning just hit them with a hose and the rust just comes right off. If they're not too rusty, just dye and wax them. IMO it's too late in the year to dip or paint traps to be used this season for any land animals.

Unless the rust is thick and scaly don't worry about it at all. Boiling in logwood or black walnut hulls is fast and easy and all that is needed IMO.
