I’m a small time/marginally successful wolf chaser (got 20 or so the last 5 years) and use primarily Bridger #9’s. I set a lot of water sets and it’s is hard on the gear. I have about 30 of them and the seem to get slower/gummed up, especially the older ones. I always boil them before and after season.

Any thoughts on maintenance to get em like new again? I assume it’s rust somewhere in em.

Side note, I have 18 new Duke 850’s coming this week as my new sacrificial lambs. They’ll be easier to set in salt water for the pocketbook.

As mad_mike on here has stated, coils just don't hold up in salt. Long springs are a much better option.

Just doing what I want now.

You may want to add a keeper on the open end of those spring rods on the Duke. Looks like a dismantling waiting to happen. I've heard guys like to use the Sleepy Creek 4.5 for trapping in salt.

Stop boiling them....might be taking temper out out of those springs...getting too hot and older. If they are used for water sets only why boil them? Just my take...

You can't "re-temper" springs in boiling water. That practice has nothing to do with loss of spring power.

Has been my experience that SOME leave their traps in boiling water for too long. Combine that and allowing rust to build up on SET traps and a loss of trap strength spring occurs.
Just my take...

Boiling water can't get hot enough. It simply isn't possible.

Water boils at 212 degrees farenhieght.you need more than double that to effect the temper in spring steel.simple physics.
