She is very good natured and slept in the admirals arms most of the way home guarded by Finnigan and when we got home the two played together in the garden and she got used to the chickens joining in the run around. She was covered in fleas and got a bath and some flea meds. Got her belly full of food and water and now the is resting in her new spot near Fin. If her paws are anything to go by, she will be pretty big once done growing. At 8 weeks old she is the same size as Doodle, the Feist that resides with us.

Got her cleaned up last night used a flea shampoo on her and we got through the night without problems. Fin is protective of her but gives her a reprimand when she tries to steal one of his toys or his food. She loves him and we went for a walk this morning after I got back from Tractor supply with some de wormer and other puppy stuff and she just follows him around. So when I call him, he comes with Elly May in tow. No leashes needed She got used to her new collar in under an hour and now does not even know she has it on. We went to let out the chickens together and that went well too. Now she is having a nap as she is pooped from her morning adventures. Free of fleas, she will sleep so much better.

I think she will be a good addition to the homestead. The best part is that I got the admiral to think that getting her was her idea.
wink

You have 3 dogs now? What do you think your monthly dog food bill is?

Good to see the old dog accepting the young one. Im about to test this on Saturday, I think a 10 week old shorthair is coming back with us and Ive been nervous what the 8 year old springer/lab who is my shadow will think. Did ur dogs first meet when you brought the pup home?

Very nice looking puppy and it sounds like you are doing a great job looking out for her welfare.

Technically I only have two dogs. The other two ( feist and great Pyrenees ) belong to the neighbor. But they hang out with us as we are here and they work every day. Dexter the great Pyrenees is in love with a German Shepard a couple of miles down the road and is hanging out with those folks . He has not been back in over a week. That is part of the reason that we got Elly May now. To look after the other critters we have here. I am not really that concerned about the food costs but am guessing that I spend about a couple of hundred a month for animal food ... dogs and cats..... chickens I don't count in that equation as they give us eggs in return.

DWC Finnigan ( My GSD ) is with me 24 / 7 when I am not working on the coast. So we took him with us on the 3 hour round trip to pick up the puppy. He sits on the back seat of the truck and the admiral had the puppy in her lap on the way home.

Expect there to be the odd bark and growl when the newcomer is put in its place. But that is normal behavior and will set the hierarchy for the future. Puppies seem to have a " shield " of innocence that prevents adult dogs that are of sound mind from hurting them.

So yes, when she tried to eat his food ( with she is not supposed to do anyway as she gets puppy food ) he will growl and even snap at her. But all without actually hurting the pup. Outside, she just follows him or at least tries to keep up with him.

So don't worry would be my advice. If your dog like riding in the car / truck, take him along and meet on ground that is not his would be my advice.
