Anybody ever use pieces of wild rabbit for coyote bait? I shot one about a week ago and planned on using the fur for trapping. I am brand new to coyote trapping so I just wanna know if anybody had tried it and if it worked? I might even use some if the meat too, if I don't get it cooked in time. Don't actually have any lures or stuff like that... can't bug any locally, but I did get my hands on some coyote urine so that will be used as well!
Thanks for any tips

I'd eat the rabbit before I used it for bait. Check your regs about natural or sight exposed bait. The guts stuffed in a dirt hole is an option if legal.

When I first started trapping I picked up road kill rabbits and cats. A sharpened machete will chop that up in nice whole chunks (fur on) to be used in a dirt hole. Yes, caught coyotes and cats. Just be careful where you prepare your bait, if you have any neighbors they may look at you sorta funny chopping up bait like that.

It's a natural food for predators so I don't see why it won't work.

I tried it last year, you gotta protect it from the air or bugs and definitely check your local laws to see if its legal.

Some states don’t allow bait?

Some states don't allow a game animal to be used as bait. Some also restric size of bait as well as not being visible to flying predators or scavengers.

JC Conner uses it in late season. If Mr. Conner uses it; it works.

Absolutely, check your game laws first.

Wow, didn’t know that. Guess all commercial muskrat, beaver, and bobcat bait is out as well. Horse meat is all that can be used?

@Wanna Be, bizarre isnt it? I had no idea either and dont understand the reasoning for not allowing it. I get that they want you to cover it from the raptors, but to not be able to use it....just dont get it.

In Pennsylvania it is illegal to bait a trap with meat or animal products if the bait is visible from the air.

The fact they actually have to say that is crazy to me, lol. Got enough issues with buzzards using a dirt hole and pipe, lol. Guess if we had an actual winter or longer cooler weather then it may be different.

"Roadkill" rabbit is one bait that I have caught red fox and coyotes in body gripper boxes.
