So what does a person or business do if there is an extended cloudy and windless day or week?

How many lies will people believe before they realize their own idiocy?

Your battery bank should be large enough to last 3- 10 days

At full usage without cutting back to save power?

Sniffy's ramblings about replacing coal and nuclear power plants with solar and wind energy is ridiculous ..... he may as well propose to power the nation with fairy dust and unicorn farts. ....... In order to replace a single nuclear or coal power plant you would need around 18 million solar panels ... each measuring 2x 3 feet in size. That would be enough to put a roof over the asylum we call DC. Then you would need a mountain of batteries as solar panels don't produce much energy at night or when its cloudy or when to snows .....

Thats just to replace ONE plant. Considering that those idiots at the helm want to replace all cars and trucks with electric vechiles, the need for electric power generation is going to increase exponentially and they all need their own batteries.

Quite frankly its a crazy idea as a whole and does not stand up to the tiniest bit of real world scrutiny.

This is still the best way to power our country.
All on private land.

Add to it the fossil fuel burned to produce the panels and to dig up the earth for the minerals in the batteries.

99% of all wind and solar is grid tie , you make it while the sun shines and the power company fires up the Natural Gas turbines the rest of the time.

if you are 100% off grind absolutely you would have days of battery , but battery isn't efficient nor cost effective and if your off grid you already cut your usage significantly.

people don't want to cut usage they want to feel better about their usage.

my brother has a little over 10K he is talking about adding 10k more on his barn roof he is grid tie , it is just a way to make his money go at panels that cancel his electric bill.
he waits for good rebates , sales , tax incentives then buys. he breaks even at about 8-10 years most panels are now rated to 15-20.

America only has one issue, we have a Responsibility crisis and everything else stems from it.

I disagree with wind completely it should be banned permanently, solar, oil, and nuclear should be the future.

To answer the question I would never do solar as grid tie only, with a battery bank you can really offset the initial cost. If you have a 2022 F150 Lightning like I do, your battery bank just became portable and can run my 30 foot travel trailer for right at 3 days, maybe longer if I try to conserve energy. I think if a person was to go off grid, they should always have a backup oil or gas generator of their choosing. Just my opinion.

I was quoted $ 17,000.00 for the battery.

The batteries are dangerous, an electric fire is far different than wood burning, every solar stand alone system I know of has a propane stove and a generator.

It depends what you want to use the electricity for.

I you just want to use it for lighting and other things that don't make heat, then a 12 volt system with LED lights works great. A good deep cycle battery, $100, plus and 50 watt panel and regulator for $50 on Amazon will set you up. And you can add to that very easily if you want to scale up a bit.
