Ok so let me be more direct. Choose a start and end date, the entire trapping season works well. You need to have a worksheet that has this, you can make it yourself. It would help if the MTA more or less "sponsored it" so that when it gets submitted to the Michigan DNR it has the maximum amount of data. This study should also be published independently, regardless of the DNR, because what it does is show the legislature that trappers are being sincere and care enough about the animals to do a population density study in order to obtain the correct harvest numbers. If you guys do this, I will email the steps to force the DNRs hand and raise the harvest numbers or explain why they refuse. In the event of a refusal, then we can talk with the Michigan Legislature Natural Resource Commission.
Trapper Date and Time Bobcat was caught Location minimum of county, ciy, state. Trap & Set used to catch(no lures or secret formula or steps) Species Gender Length Height Weight General Color Observations that would include anything like damage to the bobcat, identifying features, any observed illnessess, oral health, etc. Action Taken: Harvested, released, collared & released.
That's an interesting project. Wonder what the odds of getting a permit to do so would be?

Im just saying, as somebody who has significant experience getting rule changes and preventing rule changes, nobody is going to listen until there is a study done. I will literally make the form for you guys, you will just need to print them out and fill them out, hold them until the end of the season.
At the end of the season, everybody reviews their respective forms they filled out, makes copies and whoever(MTA would be good) combines all the study worksheets puts them in date order. A cover sheet will be made that just says MTA 2022-2023 Bobcat Study, Purpose :To analyze and record bobcat incidental catches in order to guide future management decisions. List every trapper who filled out a worksheet, with contact info. You put it all together, scan a copy to publish it to TMAN and another website, send it to the DNR through email and physical certified, signature delivery.
If you guys do that and the numbers show that there are more bobcats than the DNR thinks, the harvest limit will go up, I assure you. I have no skin in the game other than to help my fellow trapper in the way that I know how. It would behoove of you guys to get 2 or more people who dont agree on things to trap any public land where the houndsmen say there arent bobcats, split the area and start filling out those worksheets as the "incidental" catches happen.

Well I understand completly. I likely would just go with whatever the cheapest collar is, or you can use hair dye color. Pick a color already on their fur, and do a line or specific mark that you can recognize. The 2020 bobcat survey has lots of interesting math....but it looks like there were right under 2700 bobcat taken by hunters and trappers during 2020.
