We were in Yellow Stone park back in the 80's during the big fire .Nearly all the Bison in the park were herded up . They crossed the road at Buffalo Ford and came right around our car . I believe the herd was about 3000 strong . Quite impressive sight to see .One of the farms I trap always has a big flock of turkeys each Winter . I never tried to count them , but there must be close to a 100. It looks like the whole woods floor is moving when they run off . They are as dumb as rocks . I have had them walk right up to me and watch me put in coyote sets . My trapping partner hunted there a couple of seasons , but quit because he said it was like hunting chipmunks . No sport at all.

I counted 312 elk in one heard once . It was a couple weeks before archery season , no big bulls , just a few juveniles
I did see over 600 once , scattered over an open hillside on private property . Probably over an area of a couple hundred acres or more . It was late fall , but I suspect those were several herds congregating together in the same area every evening

Thousands of elk on Decker Flats outside of Gardiner when they move you thought the ground was moving as mentioned above then they introduced the wolves .

When PA still had wild ringneck pheasants more than once we would flush up to fifty birds from one field or overgrown area .And before the days of bonus tags and antler restrictions I remember a day that I saw my first deer of the day about 7:15 AM .And I had at least a few within sight the rest of the day About noon I quit counting them .But I had reached 50 by then . And just a few years ago now I was hunting the last afternoon of the combined buck /doe rifle season in one of the southern PA counties .I had not killed a deer yet that year and time was quickly running out .As I made my way to a spot I wanted to check I moved slowly and was looking for any sign of deer nearby .As I stood looking up into a brushy valley I heard deer approaching .It sounded like maybe 6 or 7 .I searched for a buck but did not see any I was thinking about taking a doe when I again heard more deer coming .3 OR 4 came into view but still no buck .Again as I looked to pick out a nice doe I heard more deer approaching .. Hoping for a buck I scanned the hillside looking to see a glint of sunlight off of an antler But 5 or 6 more doe showed .So I was looking at about a dozen doe and wanted to kill a big one .They did not seem spooked and I was trying to be calm and not rush .I heard even more deer walking in the deep leaves on the hillside they where on Surely I thought this will be the buck . But this small group was as vacant of horns as the rest of the group .At least two more times I heard deer walking in my direction And they just did not seem to have even a small buck among .That would not have been legal I was. equally as dumbfound that I was looking at al those deer and could not find a buck in the entire herd as I was to see that many der in one herd .. With about 2 hours of hunting time left I THOUHJT i WAS FOR SURE GOING TO AT LEAST GET A DOE . As they side hilled their way along they worked their way to the top edge of where the woods and fields met . The farmer had a fenced area about 70 yards out into the fields where he pastured horses that he boarded. The whole herd of deer in one big ball was standing at the edge of the woods looking out into the fields I did not want to shot one in the hind quarters .And by this point with the horses out in the pasture my chance at a shot where rapidly fading .Still believing that there was no way I WAS NOT GOING TO KILL ONE OF THOSE DEER I kept waiting for the perfect shot .This whole event was about 15 to 20 minutes in the making Some way or another at least 22 deer worked their way around me in a 15 to 20 minute time span .And I WAS EITHER TO GREEDY BY HOLDING OUT FOR THE BUCK THAT NEVER APPEARED or by passing up several shots at large doe I again learned the lesson about one in hand is better than 22 in the brush .Finally the der where out of sight and I could not fathom how I had so badly messed up such a last chance gift It was dumped in my lap gift wrapped in a way that I could not do anything but succeed and yet it did not work out .Looking back on it. It was a totally cool hunt to be a part of . I had trouble counting all of them but it had to be at least 22 deer and maybe 4 to 6 more .I can't say I was pleased with the result of the event .But it was a hunt I will treasure for as long as I live I waited for a buck but that was not in the cards Them safety became and issue so what was surefire turned into a lost chance at an end of the season kill. But I can still see al those deer standing on the hill on a sunny Sat afternoon . The memory just might be better than what killing one of them would have been.
