Your 35 years old and 6' 2" and 165 lbs. I bet you are in better shape than the doctor giving you bad advice. I would tell him to pound sand. You don't need a doctor at your age and weight anyway. Save your money.

Back when I was in high school, many years ago, a friend's dad was a salesman for a pharmaceutical company. He would give good kick-backs if his doctors made "x" number of prescriptions of a certain drug; tickets to Hawaii, professional sports tickets, etc..
I've been told that doesn't happen anymore; yea right.

Yes the drug companies are corrupt, and the hospitals are too. They are in bed together. They dont want you to get better they want to prescribe drugs and keep you on them when simple diet changes can actually cure many of the health problems caused by poor diet, not just treat the symptoms with drugs.

HUGE genetic component to it.

My Dad ate everything deepfried, TONS of eggs, cracked first beer of many before first light many days, smoked since he was 12, and made it to mid 90s.
Had low cholesterol.

I eat about the same, low cholesterol.

Have a friend who.does everything " right" and cholesterol is always crazy high.

Well aren't you just awesome. cool

JoMiBru, my cholesterol was about like yours and my doctor put me on 10mg Simvastatin about 5 years ago and it's really helped with no side effects for me. He said changes in my diet would likely make very little difference. A lot of times it's just how your body produces cholesterol and there isn't much you can do about it unfortunately.

As someone who has bad cholesterol, I've been researching it for a number of years. I've yet to find a doctor that says anything of this sort.

Manage as best you can with diet. Don't worry about animal fats, stay away from drugs, sugars and simple carbs; wheat, rice, potatoes, etc.
I know it sounds opposite of what the Dr's are telling you, but remember, these are the same Dr's who told you that the covid vaccine would keep you from getting and spreading covid. Of course we now know they were dead wrong.

Wild game is virtually cholesterol free.

No fast food, drink lots of water and try to have a vegetable with my dinner. 35 years old, 165 lbs 6’2” . Pretty active, always on the move don’t like sitting still.

Don’t necessarily want to use a statin, don’t like the idea of relying on medicine. Doc suggested red yeast rice supplement.

Looking for input from other outdoorsman with diets containing lots of red meat. I know trapperman ain’t a health forum lol but I respect you guys input as I’ve been on here a long time.

Is your Dad or Mom still alive? My Dad dropped dead at 52 (and others on his side of the family), really made me think about trusting "science" as far as life longevity was concerned. I take a statin, and a drug for triglycerides, both helped. Btw getting me to kick red meat would be like taking breathing away, lol!

Yep, yukonjeff's health advice is off the wall crazy.

Limiting carbs can be super beneficial to some people, but completely eliminating them and replacing them with straight fat is just insanity.

Just so you all know. statins double your chances of getting Alzheimer's.

I never said eliminate cabs and replace it with fat.

I said lower your carbs and dont restrict eating fat. do eat it, whats on your meat, and butter, lard, olive oil, bacon grease, and cheese and eggs and fish. Good fats.

Its really not that complicated, anyone that wants to get healthy and lose weight just has to stop or severely restrict eating, rice ,poatoes ,bread, sugar, beer, sugar drinks and fruit. Thats it. enjoy everything else and eat all you want. just do it during meals.

Think genetics play a HUGE role.

I eat garbage, cholesterol is great.
A buddy eats rabbit food and fish, does everything right,
( Because everyone in his family died young) and his numbers are terrible.

My Dad ate everything fried, smoked since he was 12, popped the first of many beers most days before sunup, and made it into his mid 90s.

I was in the same boat as you, great shape young when I got tested. I have high hereditary cholesterol from both parents, funny thing was both good and cholesterol were high.I asked why is the good cholesterol so high my doctor couldn't provide that answer. He wanted to start me on a statin, as soon as he walked out of the room the nurse said Don't do the statin change your diet. He gave me free month of cholestor, said if you feel any effects stop taking it. After about 2 weeks of taking it I felt like I was hit by a mack truck 1 day. That was the end if stations for me. Cholesterol is in everything we love, I use to eat a lot of processed meats(lunch meat) I can't say I stopped eating them but have cut way back and eliminated the worse 1s. Along with milk, ice cream, cheese, beef, just cut back.

Avoiding fruit..that is terrible advice. In fact fruit is one of the best ways to increase HDL

yukon is correct.

There are many cardiologists that support low carb diets. The SAD, Standard American Diet is what caused the epidemic of high blood pressure, diabetes, and obesity in countries that follow that recommendation, US, Australia, etc.

Statins have some major draw backs health wise.

Your waist to height ratio, triglyceride number (hopefully under 70), and Apo A and Apo B, and C Reactive protein numbers are much better indicators of cardiovascular health. If your're not getting those tests from your Dr. request them.

Also Google low carb diets. There is a ton on information out there. Dr's get NO nutritional training in medical school.

My triglycerides are low.

Both parents are alive and healthy, 60 yrs old. Grandparents are 90 on dads side, moms parents both died early suddenly, not medical related.

Parents cholesterol levels are ok but living grandparents are high. Grandad says doc has fussed at him his entire life. He still eats bacon and eggs every morning and gravy on everything. Strong as an ox at 90.

Doc wants to retest my levels in 3 months. I have slightly changed my diet, due to my awareness of my high cholesterol. I eat more cereal/oatmeal for breakfast. Less lunch meats . More greens with dinner. Still eat red meat. Mostly venison , squirrel, ducks. Lots of fish and even started eating a few cans of sardines each week like Boco recommended.

Also taking a red yeast rice supplement once daily , as recommended.

I don't think I even went to the doctor when I was in my 30's! Certainly had no interest in things like blood pressure and cholesterol.

Don't fall for their nonsense.
