In the mid to late 80''s Loggy Bayou introduced a climbing tree stand with a hand climber .That meant no more hugging the tree as you climbed .That alone was a huge improvement over having to hug the tree to climb. The stand part had a spring steel band on it that went around the backside of the tree .And on that band was a strip of rubber designed to grip the tree as you climbed .I saw the new Loggy stand being demonstrated at he Harrisburg Sports and Outdoor show .I was not looking for a stand per say But I knew I wanted any thing BETTER THAN WHAT I had I bought one on the spot .Hunting season was 8 t o10 months away but I knew I would buy one sooner or later .This was years before anyone was using a safety rope with a Prussic knot and a safety vest .The stand had a seat that was laying on the stand as you climbed When you got to the level you wanted you had to flip the seat up against the tree and than attach a rope from one side of the seat to the other side Once the rope was fastened on both side the stand was very solid But in those days almost no one climbed with a rope ihat was attached to the tree. So one day it was raining rather hard through the morning and it continued into the the early afternoon .My thought was I would no go out after work due to the rain .As I was leaving work about 3PM the sun came out I thought it rained all day and now the sun is out and deer will move tonight . So I went home got a shower and dressed to go hunting I had a spot in mind and headed that direction .I was running late as I approached the tree I was going to use I saw it was still very wet It was a big Popular tree I set up my stand got on it and began to climb I had no issues and as I proceeded to flip the seat into position and fasten the role I was bent down so I could reach around the very wet tree .Suddenly the stand dropped about 5 feet I was able to get ahold around the tree and hang on .Just as quickly the stand grabbed ahold the tree and it stopped .Some how I did not fall off the front of the stand where t stopped sliding down the tree Now I was bent down an holding on to see if it was OK TO MOVE OR SHOULD STAY WHERE i was LITLE TO SEE IF THE STAND WAS GOING TO HOLD WHERE IT WAS .The stand had slid down due to the bark on the tree was very wet Tthe tree stand industry has done a good job of improving stands And they also spend all lot of time and money educating people about stand safety . Of course nothing is foolproof But not using the safety items hat are out there is a foolish mistake And you might only get one chance at making that mistake

Big the tree and ride it down. Mine didn’t have a seat, I’d have a 5gal bucket clipped to my waistband to use for a seat. It’s a wonder we’re not all paralyzed from those old stands. Killed a pile of deer out of that thing.

Never wore a harness/strap. I figure the deer need a chance at killing me if I/m out to kill them.
Some of you probably wear a helmet walking out to your mailbox. What kind of stands do you hunt out of?

Yes I had a Baker before I got the Loggy When I got the Loggy some one ask about buying the Baker I refused and said I do not know anyone I dislike that much that I would sell it to ..Over the years I had a number of close calls The only reason I did not ht the ground a few times was because it was not my turn .I ain't scared of dying but am not interested in being crippled I burned my Baker in a bonfire. Wasn’t about to let someone get it that’s already used their 8th or 9th life already, lol! The old metal blades and wing nuts. Good times, lol!

Do you guys like the ladder stands with those safety bars in front of them? I suppose they could be used for resting a gun on, too. I wonder though if they'd get in the way for shooting a bow

I screwed plywood to mine and use them for tree stand roofs in bow stands

Bump to the top. Time to be thinking about tree stand safety again. Yep if you havent inspected your stands, climbing systems now is the time before parts get hard to find when all the last minuters start panic buying.

Aluminum ladder stands for me or ground blinds my days of hanging upside down to get onto a platform are over with my shoulder the way it’s been.
Those TideWe ground blinds are a good value for the price I like the 2 I purchased so far less chance of shoulder injuries.

… I still don’t use anything… probably regret it as I ain’t getting any younger You’re the kind of friend that will inspire someone to always wear one. My son watched his best friend belly flop from about 20ft. Luckily or unluckily he didn’t hit any limbs of the way down. Just a broke wrist and I think some ribs. He didn’t fall from a climber, just a lock on. No safety harness, no safety strap, and no life line. They both now have all of the mentioned and spares, lol. What’s crazy is I survived a Baker during my youth and early 20’s without a fall. Hugged many a tree down, but never fell.
